Job Overview The Clinical Nurse I job integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of the patient and family. This role assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. The applicant will provide direction, education, and begin to acquire leadership skills at the unit level. Direct, age-specific care is delivered and accurately documented based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care. The applicant also safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions. The Clinical Nurse II job demonstrates a mastery of clinical skills and applies this knowledge to a specific patient population. This role assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. The applicant recognizes changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately, mobilizes resources to meet the individualized needs of patients/families, provides direction, education, and assumes leadership responsibilities at the unit level, and delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care while administering prescribed medications safely. The Clinical Nurse III job demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level and applies this knowledge to a specific patient population. This role assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. The applicant anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately, provides direction, education, and serves as a role model in a clinical setting, delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care, and safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions. Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible compact state licensure is required for Clin I, Clin II, and Clin III. Requirements for Continued Employment Current RN licensure in Virginia and AHA BLS HCP Certification (or equivalent) required for all levels. Experience Required Clinical Nurse I: N/A Clinical Nurse II: 12 to 24 months RN experience Clinical Nurse III: 3 years of clinical experience Experience Preferred Clinical Nurse I: Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in an acute care setting or applicable area of practice Clinical Nurse II and III: Academic health care experience; experience with similar patient population in either an acute care setting or applicable area of practice Education/Training Required Diploma or Associate’s Degree from a professional nursing program recognized by the state’s Board of Nursing is required for all levels. RN without a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or higher) must enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of start date and complete it within five years unless grandfathered. Education/Training Preferred Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program (all levels) Certification in specialty area (Clinical Nurse III) Independent Actions Follows documented physician/licensed independent provider orders and operates within the regulations governing nursing practice in Virginia, guided by the ANA Code of Ethics and VCUHS policies and procedures. Supervisory Responsibilities (if applicable) All levels organize work, delegate, and supervise others (e.g., RNs, LPNs, care partners, unit secretaries). Additional Position Requirements Clinicians must work all three shifts, weekends, and holidays. Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with the Nurse Manager/Practice Manager and may be adjusted as necessary to meet unit requirements. Physical Requirements Lifting 20–50 lbs. Protective gear usage, exposure to hazardous substances. Activities may include prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking, climbing, reaching, and heavy mental or sensory tasks.
