Performs activities and duties related to the construction and maintenance of public infrastructure; and performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility. Performs other duties as assigned.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This position reports to the Streets Division of the Public Works Department.Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe duties listed below represent the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them if the work is related or a logical assignment to this class.Perform a variety of construction and maintenance activities and duties in the completion of the services and operations of the Street Division of the Public Works Department; work with department crews as assigned by supervisory personnel.Operate light construction equipment such as the street sweeper, water truck, backhoe, front end loader, various mowing equipment and other construction equipment in support of a variety of maintenance and construction operations.Operate various equipment in the grading of streets, pouring of concrete, spreading of asphalt and other street maintenance tasks; trim trees and haul brush to the convenience station; operate various equipment to clean ditches.Transport and deliver equipment and supplies to/from construction sites; perform preventive maintenance tasks on equipment and vehicles including cleaning, lubricating and adjusting.Maintain records and logs of all work performed; perform the duties of an equipment operator when required.Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.Performs other duties as assigned.RequirementsEducation, Training and Experience:High school diploma or GED.One (1) year of equipment operation experience.One (1) year of asphalt and concrete experience.Licenses and certificates:Must possess a valid State of Texas Driver's License Class "CDL-B" and good driving record as defined by City policy.State of Texas Driver's License Class "CDL-A" preferred.Special Requirements: Not ApplicableSupplemental InformationKnowledge of:Operations, services and activities of a streets maintenance.Methods and techniques of light construction equipment operation.Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.Basic principles and procedures of record keeping.Operations, services and activities of the city.English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.Traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in equipment operations.Methods, materials, techniques and equipment used in the minor maintenance and repair of light construction equipment.Safe handling of traffic in a construction zone.Operational characteristics of light construction equipment and tools.Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.Ability to:Operate a variety of light construction equipment in a safe and effective manner.Perform heavy labor as needed.Follow all safety rules and regulations of the City of Waxahachie.Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws, and regulations.Understand and follow oral and written instructions.Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:The physical and mental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by employees to successfully perform the essential functions of this class.
