Director of Community Supports

Position Summary:

The Director of Community Supports is responsible for the operations of an array of services delivered in community settings throughout the agency. The director oversees and is responsible for the employees in that division. The director ensures quality service consistent with the vision, mission and fiscal objectives of the agency and provides for strategic visioning for the division that is in line with agency strategic vision. Additionally, the director ensures compliance with accreditation and regulatory agencies and provides leadership consistent with program goals.

The Director covers services in Muskegon, Kent and Ottawa counties. Travel to all service sites will be required. We have office space in each service county and base office location is flexible, with opportunity to work from home part of the time.


Essential Functions: Include the following, other duties may be assigned

• Supports the service delivery array with a focus on creating safety for people served through skills development, supporting a strengthening and expanding of relationships, and supporting achievement of individual goals.
• Responsible for selection, supervision and performance management for a team of direct reports and for the implementation of personnel policies and performance management throughout the service line both directly and indirectly through subordinate managers. Provides for succession planning, professional growth, relevant continuing training and development of the team.
• Cultivates by example a strong and transparent workplace culture ensuring open communication, leadership presence and development of all employees toward the mission and goals of the organization
• Collaborates with Director of Programs and Finance Director to negotiate service rates and develop program budgets which ensure adequate resources to operate programs
• Monitors adherence to established budgets and cost control measures, prioritizing expenditures, reviewing budget reports with direct reports on needed actions to address any issues.
• Ensures compliance with agency, accreditation, contract, and legal requirements, including monitoring compliance, preparation, and participation in audits, and develops and monitors corrective action plans as necessary.
• Conducts investigation of complaints, including but not limited to, recipient rights, and significant violations of agency policy. This includes written development and monitoring of corrective action plans.
• Assures launch pads are professional, learning and person centered. In collaboration with the property department supports and assures that the maintenance of respective launch pads meet agency requirements in areas of safety and quality.
• Conducts and attends various meetings of community supports leadership employees.
• Facilitates leadership of agency committees and work groups as assigned, ensuring groups meet goals and objectives aligned with committee or work group scope and strategic direction.
• Leads the development and management of service line program standards to ensure quality, consistency and compliance with requirements across the agency.
• Develops and maintains strong partnerships with funders, community resources, and other stakeholders.
• Nurtures new relationships through community networking that enhances, expands or supports the development of programs and services in line with organization mission. Recommends and implements new approaches to care and the quality of service provided.
• In coordination with Director of Programs and other team members, support program evaluation process to continually improve impact and outcomes for people served in community supports.
• Manages risk, corporate compliance, health and safety, outcomes management and performance improvement throughout the region, engaging other agency leaders to support as necessary.
• Provides leadership for community supports program related initiatives as needed. This includes but is not limited to program pilots, continuous quality improvement projects and support for programs struggling to meet goals and objectives.

Education and/or Experience

This position requires a bachelor's degree in business administration, public administration, psychology, social work or related field (master's degree in these same fields preferred) and at least five years' experience in a key management role. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.


Communication Skills

Ability to communicate effectively with others in person, by telephone or videoconference, and in written form as appropriate for the needs of the audience. Ability to interpret a variety of information in written and verbal form.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to use mathematics to communicate and interpret information and solve problems.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems, deal with a variety of variables, make independent decisions relative to duties and direct others effectively in carrying out those decisions.

Computer Skills

Proficiency with all basic business applications, such as, spreadsheets, presentation software, word processing, calendars, email, videoconferencing, and internet.

Other Qualifications

Work well both independently and cooperatively as part of a team. Exhibits creative thinking when reviewing existing procedures and proposing improvements as well as the ability to develop and implement creative strategies. Ability to provide in-person support at program locations during program hours as needed.

Physical Demands

Prolonged periods of sitting and working on a computer. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.

Work Environment

This job is eligible for regular remote work as approved by the immediate supervisor and outlined in the MOKA Remote Work Agreement. The work normally occurs in an indoor office, home office, or community environment; includes regular travel to various MOKA sites and external locations, access to reliable transportation during the workday is required.
