Senior Family Law Staff Attorney START Immediately available SALARY $69,000 - $72,000 Annually, DOE Full-Time: Regular Full-Time, Exempt (35 hours/week) Part-Time: Compensation prorated based on scheduled hours and experience; Non-Exempt (20–30 hours/week), Hourly rate DOE based on experience and scheduled hours. BENEFITS Full-time employees are eligible for Health (partial payment), Dental, and Vision Insurance, as well as generous vacation and holiday allowances in accordance with organizational policy SUMMARY Peace Over Violence seeks a Senior Family Law Staff Attorney with demonstrated commitment and experience working with survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, stalking, and other forms of interpersonal violence. The ideal candidate will possess strong litigation and advocacy skills, a trauma-informed approach to legal services, and a commitment to public interest law and survivor empowerment. This position may be structured as either full-time or part-time depending on organizational needs, funding, and candidate availability. Caseload and responsibilities will be assigned proportionate to scheduled hours and program needs. The Senior Family Law Staff Attorney will provide comprehensive family law representation and legal advocacy to survivors, including restraining orders, custody, divorce, support, and related matters. This position will also support legal clinics, community outreach, and mentorship of legal staff and volunteers within the Legal Advocacy Program. The attorney will work under the supervision of the Managing Attorney and collaborate closely with multidisciplinary staff to ensure survivors receive holistic, survivor-centered support services. RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: Provide direct legal representation and advocacy in family law matters, including divorce/legal separation, domestic violence restraining orders, child custody visitation, paternity matters, and child and spousal support). Conduct legal intakes and risk/ needs assessments and case evaluations to determine appropriate legal remedies and develop individualized case strategies. Provide pro per assistance and legal advocacy to survivors navigating the family court system. Maintain consistent communication with clients regarding case progress, court preparation, and legal options Participate in safety planning and collaborate with advocates and counselors to support survivor stability and well-being. Assist survivors with referrals to supportive services and community-based resources as needed. Maintain timely and accurate documentation, case notes, and legal filings in accordance with organizational and funder requirements. Outreach, Education, and Collaboration Conduct community outreach and legal education presentations related to family law rights and protections for survivors. Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, coalitions, and community partnerships supporting survivors of violence. Build and maintain collaborative relationships with courts, legal aid organizations, social service providers, and community partners. Provide mentorship, guidance, and support to legal staff, advocates, interns, and volunteers as assigned. Serve as a legal resource within the organization regarding family law matters affecting survivors. PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION & COORDINATION Ensure compliance with confidentiality standards, grant requirements, organizational policies, and legal ethics obligations. Maintain accurate case records, statistical reporting, and timekeeping in the agency’s case management system. Assist with development and implementation of legal program procedures and best practices in collaboration with the Managing Attorney. Participate in staff meetings, training, and organizational initiatives as assigned. Perform additional duties necessary to support the mission and goals of Peace Over Violence. QUALIFICATIONS Active member in good standing with the California State Bar. Minimum of 3 years of family law practice experience required. Demonstrated experience working with survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, dating violence, and/or other trauma-impacted populations. Strong understanding of trauma-informed legal advocacy and survivor-centered service delivery. Knowledge of family law procedures, restraining orders, custody matters, and related civil legal remedies. Strong legal writing, litigation, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to independently manage a caseload while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team. Demonstrated understanding of crisis intervention and the dynamics of domestic and sexual violence. Commitment to racial equity, social justice, and survivor empowerment. Ability to work effectively with diverse communities and populations throughout Los Angeles County. Willingness to complete Peace Over Violence’s 82‑hour counselor/advocate training or equivalent training. Demonstrates professionalism, sound judgment, initiative, and the ability to maintain empathetic and nonjudgmental relationships with clients and community partners. Bilingual proficiency, particularly Spanish, strongly preferred Some travel may be required. Flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends, may be required.
