About the Company

At Modern Eyes, we believe great eye care starts with kindness, trust, and truly listening to people. We are a friendly, local eyecare practice combining personalized care with modern technology, thoughtful communication, and independent eyewear. Our team is committed to making every patient feel welcome, supported, and understood from the moment they walk through our doors.

Why Join Modern Eyes?

While our patients come first, our team is a very close second. We believe great care starts with a caring workplace built on compassion, patience, curiosity, and teamwork.

At Modern Eyes, you’ll be part of a close-knit team that takes pride in helping people feel heard, comfortable, and confident. This is a place for someone who values relationships, craftsmanship, and the satisfaction of guiding patients from prescription to eyewear they truly love.

If you are motivated, caring, and excited to keep learning, Modern Eyes is a place where you can build a stable, meaningful role, grow your skills, take ownership of the patient experience, and do work that truly matters.

Position Summary

The Optician works with the Optometrist and patient care team to provide an excellent experience for patients from prescription to finished eyewear. This includes frame and lens selection, measurements, orders, dispensing, adjustments, repairs, troubleshooting, patient education, and maintaining an organized optical area.

We are looking for an energetic, experienced optician with a current Massachusetts optician’s license, strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and a genuine commitment to patient care.

Modern Eyes is not a high-pressure sales environment. We focus on education, trust, accuracy, thoughtful frame selection, personalized lens recommendations, and helping patients make choices that genuinely fit their needs.

This role is primarily focused on optical care, with collaboration across the clinical and administrative teams as needed. There are opportunities to develop in areas such as optical leadership, frame buying, lab and vendor coordination, apprentice training, specialty lens support, and patient experience leadership.

This is a full-time position, approximately 40 hours per week, with a Tuesday-Saturday schedule. No Sundays, late evenings, or major holiday work.

Who Thrives in This Role

Someone who:

Treats patients with compassion and respect and helps people feel comfortable, informed, and confident in their eyewear choices

Communicates clearly and kindly

Pays close attention to detail and accuracy

Enjoys helping patients choose frames and lenses that fit their needs, style, and budget

Is comfortable discussing products, insurance benefits, and fees

Is eager to learn, receptive to feedback, comfortable with technology, and able to solve problems

Works well as part of a team and stays calm in a busy environment

Duties & Responsibilities

Welcome patients warmly and professionally

Assist with frame and lens selection, optical recommendations, and patient education

Take accurate measurements and verify prescriptions and orders

Manage optical orders from start to finish, including order entry, tracking, patient communication, receiving, quality control, and follow-up

Dispense, adjust, repair, and troubleshoot eyewear

Review fees, insurance benefits, non-covered services, balances, patient responsibility, payments, and related documentation accurately and clearly

Maintain an organized and welcoming optical area, frame board, laboratory area, and workspace

Maintain inventory of frames, laboratory supplies, contact lenses, and other optical items as directed

Use EMR systems, ordering platforms, office software, and phone systems accurately and efficiently

Support a smooth patient flow and positive patient experience throughout the office

Assist with contact lens hygiene education and insertion and removal training for soft, RGP, Ortho-K, and other specialty contact lenses as directed

Communicate with labs, vendors, insurance plans, and other care partners as needed

As part of a small, collaborative practice, this role may occasionally assist with basic clinical or administrative support when needed

Experience & Education

Required:

Current Massachusetts optician's license

Experience assisting patients with frame and lens selection, eyewear dispensing, adjustments, repairs, and optical problem-solving

Comfort working with patients in a caring, professional manner

Strong communication, interpersonal, and patient care skills

Strong attention to detail and accurate documentation

Comfort using technology in a patient-care setting

Collaborative attitude and willingness to support the team where needed

Preferred:

Familiarity with independent eyewear, premium lenses, specialty lens designs, and personalized frame styling

Experience with electronic medical records, ordering platforms, vision insurance, and third-party claims

Familiarity with medical terminology, especially ophthalmic terminology

Familiarity with contact lens hygiene and insertion and removal training

Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite

Additional education and certifications in optics or ophthalmic care is a plus

Physical Requirements

This role requires, with or without reasonable accommodation:

Using optical and ophthalmic equipment, computers, phones, EMR systems, and ordering platforms

Performing close visual tasks, optical measurements, order review, and patient-care documentation

Using fine motor skills for eyewear adjustments, repairs, measurements, equipment use, and patient support

Moving throughout the office to assist patients, support flow, and access eyewear, equipment, or supplies

Occasionally lifting or moving supplies, eyewear trays, deliveries, or equipment up to 25 pounds

Remaining attentive, patient, and professional in a busy clinical and retail setting

Equal Opportunity Employer

Modern Eyes is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and make employment decisions based on qualifications, merit, and business needs. Reasonable accommodation will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the role.
