CLASS TITLE:    Electrical/Mechanical Inspector  

PURPOSE OF THE CLASSIFICATION:   

Performs skilled inspection work in securing compliance with the municipal, national, or international electrical and mechanical codes, ordinance, and regulations governing existing and new electrical and mechanical installations and related equipment and performs related work, as required. 

ESSENTIAL TASKS:

• Inspects new wiring, electrical and mechanical installation in residence, business, public and other buildings to ensure conformance with established safety regulations and ordinances and for proper standards of materials and workmanship.
• Interprets municipal, national, and international codes.
• Confers with workmen and contractors pertaining to various problems encountered.
• Issues final inspection to appropriate companies for authorization of electrical service. 
• Reports on any violations concerning electrical and mechanical violations in City ordinances. 
• Issues City electrical and mechanical contractor, journeyman, and apprentice registrations when required. 
• Inspects job sites to check for proper registrations, licensing and permits and ensures work is in accordance with plans and codes. 
• Issues final inspections to utility companies for electric services.
• Researches, studies and answers information regarding all municipal, national, and international electrical codes, ordinances, and regulations.
• Serves in other inspection capacities on an as-needed basis.
• Performs other work as necessary and or as assigned.

• Must report to work on a regular and timely basis.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

The Electrical/Mechanical Inspector reports directly to the Chief Building Inspector. 

The Electrical/Mechanical Inspector does not have any direct reports or supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS :

Training and Experience:  Graduation from high school or an equivalency certificate and have not less than three (3) years’ practical experience or equivalent training and shall hold a certificate issued by the examining board of the State of Oklahoma, or ability to obtain certification within one year of employment. 

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:  Good knowledge of the methods and practices used in installing, repairing and maintaining a variety of electrical and mechanical installations, equipment and appliances; good knowledge of possible defects and faults in electrical and mechanical systems and appliances and of effective corrective electrical and mechanical installations and appliances.  Knowledge of municipal and state electrical and mechanical codes or an equivalent combination of training and experience required.  Ability to diagnose defects and hazards in old and new installations; ability to enforce regulations with firmness, tact and impartiality; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with contractors, property owners and the public at large.  Ability to read and interpret new construction plans for approval.  Ability to read and interpret all municipal electrical and mechanical codes.

Physical Requirements:  The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job in compliance with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.  On a case-by-case basis, reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  While performing the duties of this job, arm and hand steadiness and finger dexterity will be needed enough to use a key board and telephone.  Occasional walking, standing, lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to ten (10) pounds, reaching, balancing, stooping, handling, and climbing are required.   Vision, speech, and hearing sufficient to perform essential tasks.  Punctuality and reasonable attendance is essential.  Must submit to drug screening and fitness to work physical exam.

Licenses and Certificates:  Possession of a valid Oklahoma Class D driver’s license is required.  Must obtain certification by the International Code Council and the State of Oklahoma as an Electrical Inspector within one (1) year from the date of employment.  Must work to obtain certification by the International Code Council and the State of Oklahoma as a Mechanical Inspector once the Electrical Inspector certification is obtained.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Primarily in an outdoor setting and in varying weather conditions; may be exposed to environmental hazards and weather/temperature extremes.  Driving vehicle to and from properties within the City limits, requires a good driving record and driving skills. Occasional work in an office environment. 

Notice: This classification is a “safety sensitive” position as defined by the United States Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing regulations, the Oklahoma Standards for Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Act and/or the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana laws.  As a “safety sensitive” classification, you will be subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing.  Marijuana is one of the substances included in the drug panel screening.  Possession of a medical marijuana license will not excuse you from the testing process, or the consequences of testing positive for marijuana.
