EMH&T is looking to add a talented accounting professional to our team as the Accounting Manager reporting to the Director of Accounting.

The Accounting Manager provides leadership and oversight for the accounting functions supporting a project-based civil engineering organization. This role leads the team responsible for Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, client invoicing, financial reporting, contract management, and project accounting, with a strong focus on the unique financial requirements of professional services and engineering projects.

The Accounting Manager develops and implements accounting strategies, processes, procedures, and best practices that support accurate project financial management and the firm’s overall business objectives. Working closely with project managers, department leaders, and accounting staff, the Accounting Manager ensures that project financial information is timely, accurate, and actionable, enabling effective management of project profitability, budgets, costs, billings, and cash flow.

A critical component of the role is oversight of project-based billing and customized client invoicing. The Accounting Manager ensures that contract terms, billing requirements, rates, reimbursable expenses, labor charges, retainers, and other project-specific requirements are accurately reflected in invoices. The Manager partners with project managers and operational leaders to resolve billing issues, improve billing processes, and support timely collections.

Because project accounting is closely integrated with the firm’s project management systems, the Accounting Manager serves as a key resource for Deltek Vantagepoint, ensuring accounting staff and project managers understand and consistently follow established project management, timekeeping, expense, billing, and financial reporting processes. The Manager leads change management associated with system upgrades, technology enhancements, process improvements, and other business initiatives, helping translate operational requirements into effective accounting practices.

The successful candidate brings a strong understanding of project-based accounting within a professional services environment, along with technical accounting expertise, analytical ability, systems proficiency, and the leadership skills necessary to collaborate effectively with both accounting and project delivery teams. This role is instrumental in connecting the firm’s accounting operations with the financial management of its engineering projects, helping ensure projects are accurately billed, financially managed, and positioned for long-term profitability.

Key Responsibilities

Project Accounting & Accounts Receivable

• Partner with Project Managers to manage project billing, accounts receivable, and client collection activities.
• Monitor project invoicing, cash receipts, and outstanding balances to ensure timely collection of revenues.
• Track and report A/R aging and collection efforts
• Assist Project Managers in reviewing project financial performance, billing status, and revenue realization.

Deltek

• Serve as the organization’s subject matter expert for Deltek Vantagepoint, providing leadership and expertise in the system’s accounting and financial management functions.
• Oversee system processes, reporting, data integrity, and workflow optimization while partnering with Finance and other departments to maximize Vantagepoint’s capabilities and ensure accurate efficient financial operations.

Client & Contract Administration

• Facilitate onboarding of new clients by providing company information, banking details, references, insurance certificates, and other required documentation.
• Review client credit reports and assist in establishing appropriate billing and collection procedures.
• Support contract administration

Cash Management & Financial Reporting

• Manage daily cash receipts and accurately record cash transactions in accordance with cash-basis accounting practices
• Assist with monthly bank reconciliations
• Prepare recurring financial reports and assist with the preparation of financial statements and management reporting packages

Fixed Assets & Fleet Administration

• Maintain the company’s fixed asset inventory and ensure fixed asset software is current and accurate.
• Generate depreciation, inventory, and asset management reports as needed.
• Coordinate licensing, titling, registration, and recordkeeping for company vehicles and fleet assets.

General Accounting & Support

• Prepare and distribute accounting and operational reports.
• Support accounting department initiatives and special projects.
• Assist with general office operations and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• BS in Accounting.
• Strong understanding of accounts receivable, collections, cash management, and financial reporting.
• Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with Project Managers and operational teams. 

Preferred Experience

• Engineering, architecture, consulting, or project-based services environment.
• Experience with cash-basis accounting and project accounting strongly preferred.
• Project billing, project profitability reporting, and work-in-process (WIP) analysis.
• Deltek, BST, Ajera, Vision, Vantagepoint, or similar project accounting software.
