Steam Fireman at Taunton State Hospital - Evening Shift

Steam Fireman – Evening Shift Taunton State Hospital is seeking a Steam Fireman with experience in low‑pressure (I5 psi) boilers controlled by “C B Hawk” computers, focusing on maintenance of engineering systems. This position is 40 hours per week, working evenings 2:30‑11 p.m. Days off are Wednesday and Thursday. Duties and Responsibilities Checks, inspects, and monitors boilers, heat control valves, steam traps, pumps, compressors, generators, chemical and oil tanks, heaters, water softeners, smoke recorders, fans, heat exchangers, exhaust systems, air conditioning and ventilation, motor bearings, smoke stack, storage tanks, gas delivery systems, fire alarm and smoke detector systems, sprinkler systems, hydrants, stand pipes, pneumatic controls, electrical equipment, refrigeration equipment, chillers, water & sewer distribution systems, and street lighting systems. Enters information in the power plant log. Performs emergency maintenance during off‑hours, calling the Director of Support Services when unable to secure unsafe conditions and coordinating with outside vendors as directed. Enters, updates, and removes work orders in the Facilities Maintenance Management System for preventive and non‑scheduled maintenance. Operates the power plant and heating system as relief man, ensuring continuous coverage and reporting any coverage gaps to the Director of Support Services. Maintains housekeeping and cleanliness in the power plant area and other heat generation/control areas across campus. Repairs boilers, fans, pumps, compressors, turbines, heaters, HVAC equipment and related apparatus; notifies leadership when outside services are required. Works with outside vendors on inspection and maintenance contracts for engineering systems. Operates the White Way Street Lighting System. Checks water levels and pressures in the new Pump House. Required Qualifications Principles of operation of industrial heating systems and pneumatic controls used in HVAC systems. Knowledge of calibration and adjustment techniques for pneumatic control systems and use of precision measuring equipment such as manometers and voltmeters. Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques used in firing gas/oil boilers. Preferred Qualifications Ability to speak a language other than English fluently, given the population served. Three years of experience as a trade worker, including vocational training in the mechanical field. Possession of a current and valid First or Second Class Steam Firemen license issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety. Vaccination Requirement Title 101 CMR 23.00 requires certain staff to have received COVID‑19 and influenza vaccination or proof of mitigation measures.
