Underground Utility Laborer – Sewer & Storm Drain

Location: Brownsville, TX

Job Type: Full-Time

Pay: $18.00 - $25.00 per hour (Based on Experience)

MEMCO is seeking motivated and experienced Underground Utility Laborers to support sewer and storm drain construction projects in the Brownsville, TX area. Candidates must have hands-on experience with underground utility installation, including trench bedding, pipe grade, backfill, compaction, and shoring.

The ideal candidate understands how to work from elevations, slopes, percentages, grade stakes, and lasers or transits to help maintain proper pipe grade. This role is critical in supporting pipe crews and ensuring underground utility systems are installed safely, accurately, and according to project specifications.

This is an excellent opportunity to work on high-profile civil construction projects while building essential infrastructure throughout South Texas.

• Prepare trench bottoms and install bedding material for sewer and storm drain pipe installation.
• Understand and work from project grades, slopes, elevations, percentages, and grade stakes.
• Use lasers or transits to help establish and verify pipe grade.
• Assist with the installation and maintenance of trench boxes, shoring systems, shoring jacks, and fin boards.
• Perform trench backfill and compaction in proper lifts.
• Operate jumping jacks, reversible plate compactors, and walk-behind trench compactors.
• Understand proper lift thickness, moisture control, and compaction requirements.
• Assist with standard dewatering operations as needed.
• Work safely around heavy equipment, open trenches, underground utilities, and other construction trades.
• Assist with site cleanup and maintain a safe, organized work area.
• Follow all OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and project requirements.

• Previous experience on underground utility projects is required.
• Experience with sewer, storm drain, waterline, or pipeline construction preferred.
• Knowledge of trenching, bedding, backfill, compaction, and pipe grade.
• Ability to understand elevations, slopes, percentages, and grade requirements.
• Experience working with trench boxes, shoring systems, and safe excavation practices.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and technical drawings.
• Skilled in using hand tools and power tools commonly used in underground utility construction.
• Familiarity with density testing, compaction inspections, and correcting failed compaction areas is preferred.
• Strong physical stamina and the ability to perform manual labor in various weather conditions.
• Must be able to meet federal project site access requirements ( CLEAN BACKGROUND ).
• OSHA 10 Certification is required.
• Must be dependable, safety-minded, and able to work effectively as part of a team.
