Director of Primary Care Services (Student Health & Well-Being - Primary Care)
Johns Hopkins University
Director Of Primary Care Services
Reporting to the Chief Medical Director of Johns Hopkins University Student Health and Well-Being Primary Care (JHU SHWB-PC), we are seeking a Director of Primary Care Services (DPC) who will play a pivotal role in shaping the health and well-being of our JHU student community. This is a multi-faceted position that blends clinical leadership and campus-wide health advocacy with direct patient care. From overseeing clinical protocols to spearheading quality improvement initiatives and providing primary care services, the DPC will be at the forefront of college health innovation. With a significant emphasis on continuous improvement, the DPC will collaborate closely with the SHWB team to ensure the highest standards of care for a diverse student and learner population of over 17,000 undergraduates, graduates, post-docs, and clinical trainees.
The DPC will split their time among multiple sites, including the Homewood and East Baltimore campuses, as well as supporting services at the Washington, DC campus. The DPC will be a key member of the primary care executive committee, serving as a proxy for the Chief Medical Director in the Chief Medical Director's absence. The DPC will lead all accreditation-related activities. This involves providing clinical leadership, facilitating provider credentialing and privileging, monitoring peer reviews, and ensuring clinics meet accreditation standards.
The DPC will serve as the direct supervisor for all primary care physicians within JHU SHWB-PC and serve as a consultant for other clinical providers. The DPC will guide the ongoing internal education process for clinicians, nurses, and other center staff, and seek and recommend external continuing education opportunities.
The DPC advises the Chief Medical Director on clinical matters, policies affecting patient care and clinic workflows, and consults with SHWB providers on difficult clinical problems. The DPC represents the clinical staff in the development of written policies and procedures and serves as a liaison among providers, staff, and the Chief Medical Director. The DPC reviews Incident Reports after evaluation by the Chief Medical Director if deemed necessary and serves on special committees as assigned.
Specific duties and responsibilities:
Leadership (>60%)
- Recruit, supervise, and evaluate the performance of primary care physicians within SHWB-PC, including full-time, casual, and faculty physicians.
- Consult with the Program Coordinator for Credentialing, Licensing, and Compliance regarding accreditation and provider credentialing duties.
- Oversee communication with the provider team from all three sites by developing and presiding over monthly provider meetings.
- Assist the professional development committee with CME credit for monthly in-service, as well as advise providers and clinical leadership about external CME opportunities to ensure best practices and the most updated evidence-based clinical knowledge.
- Develop and implement educational opportunities for SHWB-PC staff, including presentations to campus partners or to external organizations (e.g., ACHA Annual Meeting).
- Serve on various committees, including but not limited to medical leave of absence, eating disorder collaborative, ACHA clinical medicine section, and JHM Office of Johns Hopkins Physicians Quality and Safety Committee.
- Oversee clinical aspects and mentorship of Adolescent Medicine fellow rotations at SHWB-PC Homewood.
- Act as a proxy for the Chief Medical Director and provide coverage for their responsibilities when they are absent.
- Lead implementation of SHWB-PC educational and accreditation programs, including overseeing peer review process, coordinating quality improvement program with QI committee, developing and reviewing policies and protocols, coordinating monthly accreditation committee meetings, and managing PowerDMS software.
- Assist other SHWB departments with accreditation planning as needed.
- Serve as a resource for the larger campus community, including participation in health promotion programs, building university/campus partner relationships, and serving as a medical consultant for university policies as needed.
- Work collaboratively throughout the organization to ensure the adoption of standards and policies for all functional aspects of clinical services that result in patient care improvements.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Medical Director.
Direct Clinical Care (<40%)
- Clinical care of patients, including but not limited to direct patient care, outreach/preventive health efforts, and follow-up of labs, radiological/other studies, and referrals.
- Provide medical consultations to SHWB-PC providers and assist in orienting and precepting new clinicians.
- Lead a practice that emphasizes evidence-informed and culturally competent care, affirming a wide range of student/learner identities, and promoting the diversity, equity, and inclusion values of SHWB. This includes the evaluation of current practices, ongoing training, and staff development.
- Provide back-up on-call phone services to SHWB-PC patients either when the on-call coverage provider is absent or in rotation with SHWB-PC physicians.
- Provide valuable feedback to the leadership team from the perspective of a clinician who participates in direct clinical care.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Proven ability to relate effectively to people of various ages and backgrounds, including gender and sexual orientation, as well as cultural, ethnic, and international differences.
- Considerable experience working with underrepresented and historically marginalized communities in removing barriers to access to care.
- Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated competence in young adult health, public health, or college health. Philosophical commitment to the care, development, and education of students and trainees.
