Speech Language Pathologist - Casual - Days

Job Summary Location: Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital, 933 E. Pierce St. - Council Bluffs, IA. Work Schedule: Casual, weekday coverage as needed. To evaluate and treat patients who have difficulty with speech or language. Responsibilities Evaluate a wide variety of patient types and identify physical dysfunction and functional capabilities to facilitate appropriate treatment of patients. Perform patient evaluation on initial visit and follow guideline recommendations to establish treatment plan. Review medical records and contact attending physician as needed. Choose appropriate tests, measures, and outcome tools for each diagnosis. Set functional goals with realistic time frames and include patient and families in goal planning. Conduct ongoing re‑evaluation and document evidence over the course of a week or as indicated for patient condition/status. Assess needs for additional interdisciplinary services and refer patients accordingly. Establish and implement patient‑focused treatment program with regular follow‑up to achieve maximum functional improvement efficiently. Ensure treatment plan aligns with objective evaluations, achievable short‑ and long‑term goals, and is continuously re‑evaluated for effectiveness. Adjust content and frequency of treatment as patient condition/status warrants. Coordinate treatments with interdisciplinary services as needed. Maintain thorough and timely patient documentation to enhance communication and ensure completion of the Medical Record. Complete initial evaluation, progress notes, discharge summary and patient progress reports efficiently in accordance with policy. Document accurately services provided, patient response, and progress. Update physician verbally and in writing regarding progress prior to discharge or next physician visit. Adhere to criteria for quality documentation including requirements for surgeries, signatures, allergies, etc. Provide patient education to facilitate rehabilitation, evidenced by documentation, written handouts or direct observation. Use interpreters, child‑life specialists, etc. when needed to assist instruction. Ensure accurate patient billing reflecting services provided. Supervise and provide guidance to SLP students (up to three full‑time affiliates per year) to ensure appropriate evaluation and treatment of patients. Comply with school or department supervision/feedback requirements. Participate in clinical instruction and education promotion activities. Assist with department program development, including marketing strategies and community education initiatives. Develop and maintain relationships with physicians and staff. Obtain and present staff in‑service program within one month of completing continuing education, professional workshops, or seminars. Attend all mandatory in‑services, department meetings, and required continuing education courses annually. Provide appropriate care specific to patient age group as outlined in the “Population Specific Competency Checklist.” Show responsibility with all job‑related duties (e.g., cover assigned shifts, clock in/out correctly using KRONOS). Demonstrate positivity and communication approach reflecting the Rehab department core values. Schedule Casual, weekday coverage as needed. Job Requirements Education Master's degree from an accredited university program in Speech Language Pathology. Experience Required: Successful completion of accredited SLP program; skills in oral and written communication, time management, organization, personnel management; independent work ability; adaptability; variable patient load management; patient teaching and in‑service presentation skills; adherence to professional standards and licensing body requirements. Preferred: One year of clinical experience; new graduate completing Clinical Fellowship Year acceptable. License / Certifications Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred at hire, required within 3 months of hire. Certificate of Clinical Competence (Clinical Fellowship Year can be completed within first year of employment). Speech Language Pathology (SLP) license required. Skills / Knowledge / Abilities Knowledge from accredited SLP program. Oral and written communication, time management, organization, personnel management. Independent work, self‑adaptability, variable patient load organization. Patient teaching and in‑service presentation conduction. Adherence to professional standards and licensing body requirements. Physical Requirements Medium work – exerting up to 50 pounds of force. Occasionally performed: climbing, crawling, crouching, keyboarding/typing, kneeling, sitting. Frequently performed: balancing, carrying, distinguishing colors, lifting, pulling/pushing, reaching, stooping/bending, twisting, walking, fingering/ touching, grasping, repetitive motions, speaking/talking, standing. Constantly performed: hearing, seeing/visual. Job Hazards Not related: equipment/machinery/tools, explosives (pressurized gas), electrical shock/static, radiation Alpha, Beta and Gamma, radiation non‑ionizing. Rare (1‑33%): chemical agents (toxic, corrosive, flammable, latex), mechanical moving parts/vibrations. Occasionally (34‑66%): biological agents (primary airborne and bloodborne viruses) (jobs with patient contact), physical hazards (noise, temperature, lighting, wet floors, outdoors, sharps) beyond ordinary office environment.
