Duties

Help

  • You will be responsible for servicing, inspecting, maintaining, and repairing a variety of heavy mobile equipment.
  • You will be responsible for repairing/overhauling at least one type of major system, i.e., diesel, multi-fuel, and gasoline engines, automatic/non-automatic transmissions, multi-gear assemblies, and a variety of positioning systems.
  • You will be responsible for troubleshooting, tracing, and locating defects and causes of mechanical problems to determine type and extent of necessary repairs.
  • You will be responsible for complying with appropriate repair specifications and procedures.
  • You will be responsible for independently performing preventive maintenance and services on various complex electrical devices, equipment, and components.
  • You will be responsible for guiding and training lower graded employees.
  • You will be responsible for sketching, removing, identifying, manufacturing, installing, and repairing sheet metal components of motor transport equipment and a variety of heavy mobile equipment vehicles.
  • You will performs refrigeration mechanics; installs, operates, and repairs refrigeration and air conditioning

    equipment and systems.
  • You will prototype and review new overhaul and test procedures on items being introduced into the workload.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current equipment operator license.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver's license.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current refrigerant certification.
  • Term appointments may be extended up to 8 years at the discretion of management and in accordance with applicable regulations.
  • You may be noncompetitively converted to a permanent career-conditional or career appointment under specific conditions.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • You will be required to work under adverse environmental conditions.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision; Perform maintenance, major repairs, rebuilds, overhauls, troubleshooting, adjust, and modify heavy mobile equipment; and improvise heavy mobile equipment repair procedures to find ways to mechanically and physically alter items to fit into system.

Additional information

The purpose of this position is to maintain, repair, and modify a variety of heavy-duty vehicles and mobile equipment which have utility systems or special hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, electrical, or electronic systems, features, or controls designed for construction, combat, earth moving, ship loading, firefighting, and comparable industrial or special applications.

Physical work is strenuous. May require uncomfortable positions for long periods. The work requires frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Works on top of, under, and in tight compartments, performing strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting.

Frequently lifts and carries items unassisted weighing up to 40 pounds and often exerts similar effort

in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment Frequently lifts and moves

heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and

cranes. May work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights.

Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside. When inside, is frequently exposed to draft changing temperatures, and noise which is difficult to talk above. When outside, may work in bad weather; in sand, mud, or snow; and in very hot, wet, or icy areas. In both inside and outside, workers are exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, cold, heat and fumes. They are also subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
