Job Description Summary Serve as the Research Program Manager for the Division of GI & Hepatology who acts as the point of contact for research operations related to assigned programs and projects. The lab’s focus is on pathophysiology of inflammatory diseases in the GI tract (i.e., inflammatory bowel disease) and the impact of environmental factors like circadian misalignment, alcohol misuse, stress, etc. Primary responsibilities of the candidate are focused on providing direct support and guidance to Dr. Swanson, collaborating faculty, and staff as it relates pre and post award activities, principal investigator (PI) research portfolio oversight and management, and reporting. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, overseeing the daily operations of the research laboratory, supervision and performance management of applicable laboratory personnel, oversight of development and implementation of new protocols and troubleshoots challenges, and the analyzation and communication of data. In collaboration with Department of Medicine’s centralized and divisional financial management resources, this position is responsible for assisting with the development and submission of grant applications to include budgeting, as well as post award involvement in financial management and reporting.
As the research administrative leader for the Division of GI & Hepatology, with an initial primary focus on Dr. Swanson’s NIH funded Lab, the person holding this position is viewed and must operate with a substantial amount of autonomy and be willing to use sound judgment while adapting to a regularly changing environment that at times can require assistance that is outside their routine responsibilities. As the research mission grows strategically throughout the division, this individual will provide guidance and direction to other divisional programs to include developing research protocol and projects, hiring decisions, equipment purchases, etc. Accuracy, quality assurance, customer service, and effective communication are important requirements as this position engages with a wide range of individuals both internally and externally. Success will be measured by the impact this individual has on the research programs and projects under their purview. This position will have a matrix reporting structure with the Division’s Director and Administrator.Entity

Job Duties:
20% - Daily and Ongoing Operations: This position is responsible for oversight of the division’s daily and ongoing lab operations with the overarching goal of achieving the strategic research goals and priorities of the Division Director. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Oversees and guides laboratory staff in recommendations of changes to protocols to improve validity and accuracy.
Makes recommendations for acquisition of new equipment and oversees validation and implementation of new equipment and protocols.
Ensures that radiation and laboratory safety requirements are up to date and appropriately implemented.
Ensures the work area is maintained in a safe and uncluttered environment and always maintains accountability for the preparation and maintenance of inspection readiness.
Responsible for cell line work including colonic cell lines and organoids.
Coordinate research activities with Clinical Research Staff and working with and handling human tissues and samples.
Manage daily husbandry, sanitation, feeding, breeding colony management, and enrichment schedules across conventional and barrier facilities.
Serve as an active liaison to the IACUC, participating in semi-annual facility inspections, program reviews, protocol implementation checks, and post-approval monitoring.
Maintain complete and accurate records of animal census, veterinary care, environmental monitoring, and sanitation logs.
Overseeing GI tissue sample repository
Responds to Safety Events and complaints in a timely manner.
20% - PI Research Portfolio Oversight and Management: Oversees the flow of research projects from planning to submission through implementation and closeout. Responsibilities include but are not limited to operations management, quality assurance, and regulatory oversight.
Ensures that appropriate regulatory approvals are obtained for all research activities as needed (IRB and IACUC), materials transfer/data agreements properly executed.
Collaborated with Department of Medicine centralized and divisional teams to successfully complete all stages of grant preparation, submission, and post-award.
Works closely with other institutions to submit grant proposals as appropriate.
Assists study PIs in the submission of grant materials through eCommons.
Works closely with leadership in developing, modifying, and monitoring the achievement of long-term goals and objectives and in executing process improvement.
Works closely with leadership to address current and future challenges.
20% - Staff Oversight: Supervise any research staff employed by the division with an initial focus on Dr. Swanson’s Lab to include delegation of responsibilities and performance management. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Conducts employment interviews and participates in the selection of new employees.
Supervises and trains laboratory staff, medical students, graduate students, residents, fellows, post-doctoral research fellows, and volunteers.
Direct supervisor of laboratory staff including approving PTO and conducting yearly evaluations.
Monitors, regulates, and adjusts workflows to ensure tasks are completed on time.
20% - Financial Involvement: This position will be involved with financial management from a knowledge and understanding perspective so appropriate operational decisions can be made. Partnering with the Division Administrator and Department of Medicine Pre and Post Award Team is a crucial requirement so appropriate budgetary and fiscal management can be ensured. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Oversees the financial aspects of lab operations including monitoring expenses and budgets, ordering, and maintaining appropriate inventory of supplies, and providing recommendations for capital and operational budgets.
20% - Data Collection, Reporting, and Manuscript Preparation: In collaboration with PIs, this position will be responsible for collecting data and analyzing data, writing, and submitting required monthly, quarterly, and annual reports (i.e., IRB) for studies under their purview, as well as assist with revisions and submissions of manuscripts generated for their assigned portfolio.
Ensures that information is entered correctly into databases and ensures that samples are stored appropriately.
Provides statistical analysis of data using statistical software and generates graphical representations of data as requested by leadership.
Assists leadership in reviewing, analyzing, interpreting, summarizing, formatting, editing, and preparing tables, graphs, for grant applications/progress reports, publications, and presentations.
Coordinates with local, national, and international collaborators to ensure successful research endeavors.
