Job Summary and QualificationsThe Certified Respiratory Therapist is responsible for administering respiratory care as prescribed by the attending physician and conducting diagnostic tests to assess the need for and response to therapy.
Primary Responsibilities
- Evaluate patients accurately, interpret results, and recommend alternative treatments.
- Adjust therapy modes as necessary.
- Prioritize work assignments effectively.
- Work independently while respecting patient rights and confidentiality.
- Communicate clearly with physicians, patients, and colleagues.
- Document by exception and relay all relevant information to physicians and nurses.
- Engage patients and their families in care activities for education and support.
- Assist physicians in managing patient care.
- Administer medications in accordance with hospital policies.
- Receive and interpret verbal and telephone orders efficiently, documenting as required.
- Demonstrate proficiency in using necessary patient equipment.
- Remain calm and effective in emergency situations.
- Adhere to established infection control policies.
Staff/Unit Responsibilities
- Delegate tasks appropriately based on job descriptions and standards of practice.
- Utilize resources efficiently and cost-effectively.
- Contribute to the development of staff and students.
- Maintain and enhance personal professional competencies.
- Foster a collaborative team spirit through active cooperation.
- Assist in coordinating interdepartmental services.
- Participate in Performance Improvement and Utilization Review initiatives.
- Support the patient-focused care delivery system.
- Help coordinate unit operations.
- Assist in various aspects of care, including dietary, housekeeping, infection control, and supply management.
- Attend at least 80% of in-services and departmental meetings.
- Provide support to other hospital areas as needed.

Annual Requirements
- Complete annual education requirements.
- Adhere to attendance requirements.
- Follow the department's dress code.
- Participate in the Code of Conduct refresher course.
- Complete any other required training.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification must be obtained within 90 days of starting employment.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support certification.
- State certification as a Respiratory Therapist/Practitioner (RRT/RCP).
- Associate Degree in a relevant field.
- Certification as a Respiratory Therapist (NBRC-CRT).
