Maintenance Specialist II

Job Summary Maintenance Specialist II – Join Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) at San Antonio State Hospital. Responsible for routine, preventive and repair work on building systems and infrastructure in hospital and residential facilities. Work under moderate supervision and may operate heavy machinery and motor vehicles as needed. Essential Job Functions Attend work on a regular basis and may work specific or rotating shift, including overtime. Perform inspections, adjustments, maintenance and repair on building systems (plumbing, HVAC, electrical, welding, carpentry, painting, masonry). Follow recognized codes and standards. Use hand, power and test equipment to complete repairs, renovations or installations. Accurately process and maintain records on work orders, projects and material requisitions. Operate heavy machinery (backhoes, forklifts) when required and train others on proper repair procedures. Perform other duties as assigned, including disaster response and Continuity of Operations activation. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of building maintenance, plumbing, HVAC, sanitation, refrigeration, electrical systems. Knowledge of industrial safety, fire and safety regulations. Ability to perform preventive maintenance, inspect buildings, use hand and power tools. Ability to interpret drawings, schematics, or sketches and follow instructions. Effective oral and written communication with maintenance/facility team. Registration, Licensure & Certifications Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain within 90 days of hire. Out‑of‑state license holders must provide a certified driving record as required by HHSC Fleet Management policy. Initial Screening Criteria One (1) year of work experience in electrical, plumbing, masonry, mechanical equipment, locksmithing, painting, motor vehicle maintenance, grounds keeping, equipment maintenance, HVAC, carpentry, welding or electronic cabling. Completion of trade school in any of the above may be substituted for experience. Additional Information Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, LEIE). Males 18‑25 must be registered with Selective Service. All applicants must be at least 18 years old; certain centers require 21 years. Flexibility in work hours, overtime and extended hours may be required. Compliance with HDSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures is required. Vaccinations against hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, and influenza are required. If not immunized for influenza, a mask may be required for a period.
