Unit Secretary Part Time Day EmPATH

Position Summary The Unit Secretary performs a variety of general clerical and non‑clinical patient duties, facilitates communication, expedites interdepartmental services and maintains required records on the nursing unit. Reporting to the Clinical Unit Supervisor, the Unit Secretary is accountable for the responsibilities listed below. The position requires full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital. The employee is expected to demonstrate consistent behavior with the Core Values and support the hospital’s strategic plan and quality improvement process. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Demonstrate positive interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, other hospital departments, and unit staff. Role‑model the hospital’s patient satisfaction efforts when interacting with patients, visitors and colleagues. Answer the telephone, provide courteous assistance, summon the correct people, and record messages with date, time, message and caller. Answer patient call system promptly; designate level of care requested (licensed or non‑licensed) on nurse call system; send alerts to respective caregiver’s phone; ensure patients receive a response or are informed of progress within 5 minutes. Ensure appropriate paperwork is ready for patient transfers and discharge to the lobby. Coordinate with Care Management concerning admissions, transfers and discharges; notify the hospitalist if needed. Be aware of planned state orders in Cerner. Work with Care Management to access records from other facilities and/or prior MLKCH hospitalizations. Greet patients and visitors upon arrival to the unit, escort admissions/transfer to room, orient them to room, call light use, TV, and provide nurse and PCT names; practice age‑and‑population‑specific awareness. Assist with belongings inventory upon admission and discharge, disposition of left‑behind items, and belongings audits. Make hospitality rounds on every shift for the HCAHPS survey. Make unit rounds to check for needed repairs, remove equipment left in rooms, and verify computer function and laminated teaching tools attached to WOWs. Stock isolation ante‑rooms. Maintain inventory of unit property. Keep nurses station, workroom, supply room, equipment storage and multipurpose rooms tidy, free of clutter. Participate in unit‑based initiatives that promote patient safety and support customer service goals. Be aware of the Watson Model of Care, including key elements of Caring, Competence, Communication, and Commitment. Participate in Quality and Performance Improvement data collection and unit metrics as requested; perform IPOC audits. Uphold professional appearance and adhere to dress code: wear ID badge and promote proper identification for peers and staff. Perform any other duties assigned by the Clinical Unit Supervisor or Nurse Manager. Compensation Hourly salary range: $22.00 – $31.62, depending on experience. Position Requirements High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalency. Minimum of 1 year experience as a Unit Secretary in an acute care hospital (preferred). Strong office and interpersonal skills. Basic computer skills. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Completion of the annual Workplace Violence Prevention Program/Certificate within 30 days of hire.
