Job Description

The Project Accountant supports full-cycle cost management for large-scale commercial construction projects, with a strong focus on transactional finance and audit-related activities. This role manages the financial and contractual details behind the scenes at project sites, ensuring accurate cost control, timely processing of change orders, and clear financial reporting to stakeholders. The position partners closely with a Project Cost Manager and site teams to maintain robust financial controls and support the successful delivery of complex, multi-building construction programs.

Responsibilities

• Support full-cycle cost management for construction projects, establishing and maintaining robust cost controls from project concept through completion.

• Facilitate the use of the subcontractor change management system, ensuring timely responses from responsible parties and performing completeness reviews on all submissions.

• Process change orders in the system of record, ensuring all entries meet timeliness, accuracy, and completeness standards.

• Provide audit and transactional finance support for project sites, focusing on the detailed financial elements of change orders, subcontractor compliance, and related documentation.

• Support the preparation and presentation of monthly cost reports and risk assessments to internal and external stakeholders, highlighting key variances, risks, and recommended mitigation actions.

• Contribute to monthly stakeholder meetings and formal presentations by providing clear financial content, data-driven insights, and informed commentary.

• Review and interpret contractual terms to recommend entitlements related to change orders, claims, and other commercial matters.

• Coordinate directly with client finance and accounting teams to ensure accurate financial reporting and full compliance with established financial controls.

• Analyze and report on local labor markets, union implications, commodity cost fluctuations, and tax impacts to inform project cost strategy and budget updates.

• Assist in resolving invoice and change order discrepancies, as well as payment-related issues, by investigating variances and coordinating with relevant parties.

• Perform reconciliation and data entry tasks to maintain accurate and up-to-date project accounting records.

• Collaborate with the Project Cost Manager and broader project team to support effective financial forecasting and risk management, while focusing on transactional execution.

• Utilize construction management and financial tools, including Procore and Smartsheet, to manage project financial data and support established processes.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Engineering, or a related field.

• A minimum of 1 year of project accounting or finance experience in the construction industry.

• 1–3 years of experience in a project management, cost management, or accounting role within the commercial construction industry.

• Thorough understanding of construction accounting principles and practices.

• Hands-on experience with the entire change order lifecycle, from initiation through approval and closeout.

• Proficiency in construction management software such as Procore or Autodesk Construction Cloud.

• Experience with project accounting, including reconciliation and detailed data entry.

• Familiarity with financial controls, audit support, and transactional finance processes in a construction environment.

• Ability to interpret and apply contractual terms related to change orders, claims, and commercial entitlements.

• Strong analytical skills to assess labor markets, union implications, commodity fluctuations, and tax impacts on project costs.

• Proficiency with spreadsheet and collaborative tools, including Excel and Smartsheet.

• Strong attention to detail and accuracy in processing financial and contractual documentation.

• Effective communication skills to present financial information clearly to stakeholders.

• Background in supporting project cost strategy and budget updates in collaboration with project and finance teams.

• Comfort working in a fast-paced, site-based environment with multiple stakeholders and concurrent projects.

• Ability to build productive working relationships with project managers, cost managers, subcontractors, and client finance teams.

• Strong organizational skills to manage multiple change orders, invoices, and financial tasks simultaneously.

• Proactive approach to identifying discrepancies, risks, and process improvements within project accounting workflows.

Work Environment

This role is based full-time on active construction job sites, five days per week, at various locations across the United States. Each site may include between 4 and 14 buildings under construction, and project durations can range from approximately 18 months to several years. There is a strong pipeline of future builds, creating ongoing opportunities as new data center projects come online. Onsite, you will work in well-equipped mobile office facilities that function like corporate offices, typically housing 30 to 100 office and project staff. These offices provide individual workspaces, monitors, and necessary hardware, along with restrooms and lunch provided. Standard hours are approximately 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. You will spend most of your time working in Procore as the primary project financial management tool, with additional work in Smartsheet, where many processes are established, and some use of Excel. While the primary expectation is to be onsite five days a week, there may be limited flexibility in the future to work intermittently from a regional hub office, depending on project needs and individual circumstances.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Covington, GA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $38.46 - $48.07/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
