Job Description:

Our Veterinary Technicians are responsible for providing high-quality patient care, assisting veterinarians during examinations and procedures, performing diagnostic testing, administering treatments, and supporting hospital operations. In addition to traditional veterinary technician responsibilities, this role serves as a mentor to newer team members, helps maintain efficient appointment flow throughout the hospital, and performs in-house laboratory diagnostics to support timely patient care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Patient Care & Nursing

• Obtain accurate patient histories and vital signs.
• Restrain and handle patients safely and compassionately.
• Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as prescribed.
• Place and maintain intravenous catheters.
• Monitor hospitalized patients and document changes in condition.
• Assist with patient admissions, discharges, and client education.
• Maintain accurate and complete medical records.

Surgical & Anesthesia Support

• Prepare patients for emergency/urgent care/same day appointment procedures.
• Assist with sedation/anesthesia induction, monitoring, and recovery of those patients.
• Monitor patient parameters during procedures and document findings.
• Maintain sterile techniques and surgical protocols when applicable.
• Prepare and maintain surgical instruments and equipment.

Diagnostic Testing & Laboratory Duties

• Collect blood, urine, fecal, cytology, and other diagnostic samples.
• Perform in-house laboratory testing, including:
• • CBCs
  • Chemistry panels
  • Urinalysis
  • Fecal testing
  • Cytology preparation
• Additional point-of-care diagnostics as indicated
• Ensure laboratory quality control procedures are completed and documented.
• Communicate laboratory results promptly to the veterinarian.
• Properly package and submit samples to reference laboratories when needed.

Appointment Flow & Hospital Efficiency

• Assist in managing daily appointment workflows to ensure patients are seen in a timely manner.
• Anticipate veterinarian needs and prepare patients, equipment, and diagnostics ahead of appointments.
• Coordinate with customer service representatives, assistants, and doctors to minimize delays.
• Help prioritize urgent and emergent cases while maintaining schedule efficiency.
• Communicate proactively with team members regarding patient status and workflow needs.
• Support smooth patient movement through exams, treatments, diagnostics, and discharge.

Mentorship & Team Development

• Serve as a positive role model and resource for veterinary assistants and newly hired technicians.
• Assist with onboarding and training of new staff members.
• Provide guidance on clinical skills, patient care standards, hospital protocols, and workflow expectations.
• Encourage teamwork, accountability, and professional growth.
• Identify training opportunities and communicate development needs to leadership.
• Promote a collaborative, supportive learning environment.

Client Communication

• Educate clients regarding medications, treatment plans, preventive care, and post-procedure care.
• Answer client questions professionally and compassionately.
• Reinforce veterinarian recommendations and treatment plans.

Equipment & Facility Maintenance

• Maintain exam rooms, treatment areas, and laboratory equipment.
• Ensure diagnostic and monitoring equipment is clean, calibrated, and functioning properly.
• Follow OSHA, safety, and infection control protocols.
• Assist and train on supply stocking.

Qualifications

• Current CVT, LVT, or RVT credential preferred, or eligible for credentialing.
• Strong technical nursing and laboratory skills.
• Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and organizational abilities preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and restrain animals weighing up to 50 pounds, with assistance for larger patients.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the workday.
• Ability to safely handle animals of varying sizes and temperaments.
