PAY RATE: $21.33 - $22.45 Per Hour

JOB SUMMARY AND PURPOSE

This position will help initiate, facilitate, and to continuously improve, the safety practices and procedures for residential and non-residential facilities.  Supervised by the Safety Supervisor and works closely with the Safety, Facilities and Accessibility Director, VOALA and SCADP Program Managers and Program Monitors in education on emergency procedures and life safety codes pertaining to emergencies, disasters, fire, OSHA, licensing, and program requirements.  Assists in site inspections/notifications, monitoring and practicing procedures and requirements throughout the program year.  Will also train lead monitors, staff and programs on safety and emergency preparedness regulations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

• Creates (when applicable) and Communicates safety materials.
• Participates in on-going monitoring of systems that involve emergency preparedness principles and the Environmental Health and Safety protocols.
• Records any un-safe safety practices at multiple locations and communicates any concerns to supervisor or team lead.
• Provides on-going support and training to designated sites and works closely with Lead Monitors.
• Gathers feedback/input from site staff on site operations, safety procedures, emergency response & planning, and training needs. (Lead Monitor Meetings)
• Provides training on staff specific needs such as: screening, emergency response, de-escalation, shelter operations and New Monitor Training.
• Occasionally works outside regular schedule to support evening and overnight shift staff to include virtual and in-person trainings and meetings. (Training Across Shifts)
• Provides employees resources on safety practices and disaster preparedness.
• Maintains emergency preparedness and health supplies inventory and delivers to sites when applicable.
• Follows up and provides reports on safety findings from safety inspections to supervisor.
• Supports staff and facilities in emergency evacuation drills and communication within programs.
• Assist in minor operations that might include the following:
  • Attending community meetings and bringing back resources
  • Networking with emergency personnel such as Fire Dept. /Police Dept./Emergency Preparedness community.
  • Participating in internal and external safety fairs and community events.

• Regular tasks may also include:

  • Attend and participate in staff meetings/trainings
  • Support supervisor by attending/support monthly events or functions at sites
  • Take minutes at safety meetings or safety committee

ESSENTIAL ABILITY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Ability to work and deal with difficult, uncooperative, and potentially aggressive clients as VOALA serves the neediest of the needy in our programs, which may include clients with homelessness, mental illness, substance abuse, recently released from incarceration, and other challenges. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• An essential function of this position requires incumbents to report to the office. 
• Maintains safety materials and provides updates as needed. Visits sites and provides report/notifications.  
• Conducts on-going monitoring and data collection of safety data from safety walks and trainings
• Follows up with staff and provides resources from information collected from safety reports, inspections, and procedures
• Handles inventory and works with supervisor/safety team on supply orders and checklist when needed.
• supports program staff in emergency drills, communication, and resources for training events and safety functions
• Provides safety input in the following organizational and community venues:
  • Community meetings
  • Networking with emergency personnel such as Fire Dept. /Police Dept.
  • Participates in community, staff or advisory meetings
  • Takes minutes at meetings
  • Collects, tracks, and monitors safety data from reports and events
• Research and obtain community assessment data for projects and grants.

MANDATED REPORTER

As service providers to the underprivileged and vulnerable in our community, all employees are considered Mandated Reporters, and must report any instance of physical or sexual abuse to proper authorities.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

• Must be able to pass a fingerprint clearance, background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment and education verifications
• Proof at time of hire a Tuberculosis (TB) clearance and Health screening within 6 month prior to hire date. Annual influenza vaccination (between Aug1-Dec 1) Pertussis (whooping cough) and measles immunization, Health screening.
• Must hold class 3 California Driver’s License and proper insurance as required with an acceptable driving record substantiated by a copy of DMV records.
• Must have access to an automobile with adequate insurance coverage and a valid California driver’s license, or means to other accessible transportation.
• Ability to perform under circumstances of possible emotional stress and conflicts dealing with difficult, uncooperative, and potentially aggressive clients as VOALA serves the neediest of the needy in our programs which may include clients with homelessness, mental-illness, substance abuse, recently released from incarceration and other challenges.

EDUCATION:

• High School Diploma, GED, or one-year related experience

EXPERIENCE:

• 1 year of experience with health and safety principles.
• 1 year experience working in congregate settings that may include, DPH, DPSS, Regional Center, Jails, Rehabilitation, Shelters or VA programs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• OSHA or safety certificates.
• Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) certified (Required within 12 months of hire)
• Knowledge of emergency preparedness practices.
• LADBS Zimas, google earth, canva
• Guard Card
