PURPOSE  

The purpose of the Rubber Goods Tech I position is to safely and accurately inspect, clean, test, and document insulated rubber personal protective equipment used in electrical work. This position helps ensure rubber gloves, sleeves, blankets, line hoses, and other insulated protective equipment meet applicable safety, testing, and customer requirements before being returned to service. The Rubber Goods Tech I supports the reliability of critical worker protection by following established testing procedures, maintaining accurate records, and identifying equipment that does not meet required standards.

NATURE AND SCOPE  

The Rubber Goods Tech I performs cleaning, visual inspection, dielectric testing, and documentation of insulated rubber PPE in accordance with established safety procedures, customer requirements, and applicable ASTM standards & NAIL. The position also identifies noncompliant equipment, maintains accurate testing records, supports test equipment and work area upkeep, and assists with labeling, packaging, and other Test Lab activities as needed.

Able to follow technical procedures – can learn and consistently apply ASTM standards, work instructions, and customer requirements. 

Good recordkeeping skills – accurately records test results, item identification, failures, and traceability information. 

Mechanically/technically inclined – comfortable learning to operate, inspect, and care for dielectric testing equipment. 

Organized – keeps tested, untested, passing, and rejected equipment properly separated and identified. 

Good communicator and team member – reports unusual conditions, recurring failures, equipment concerns, and customer-specific requirements. 

Self-motivated and accountable – able to stay productive while maintaining quality and safety standards. 

Physically capable – comfortable standing, walking, performing repetitive work, and handling materials throughout the shift; the current description calls for lifting up to 50 lbs.

JOB RESPONSIBILITES 

1. Inspect, clean, and prepare insulated rubber PPE, including gloves, sleeves, blankets, line hoses, and related equipment, for electrical testing. 
2. Perform high-voltage dielectric testing in accordance with established procedures, safety requirements, and applicable ASTM standards. 
3. Identify damaged, defective, or noncompliant equipment and properly document and segregate failed items. 
4. Accurately record testing results and maintain required documentation for customer reporting and equipment traceability. 
5. Mark, label, sort, and package passing equipment for return to the customer. 
6. Safely operate testing equipment and perform routine equipment checks and basic care. 
7. Follow customer-specific testing, labeling, and identification requirements. 
8. Communicate testing concerns, unusual failures, equipment issues, and recurring quality problems to the supervisor. 
9. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe Test Lab work environment. 
10. Assist with receiving, staging, data entry, customer tagging, pickup/delivery, and other Test Lab activities as needed.

WORKING LOCATION AND CONDITIONS  

• Based in test lab and warehouse environment located in West Columbia, SC
• Standard working hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday with 1 hour for lunch
• Standard two 15-minute break periods per day
• Requires standing, walking, repetitive motion, and lifting (up to 50 lbs.) throughout the shift
• Requires availability outside of standards hours as needed to support critical issues or projects

• Ability to stand and walk within a warehouse environment for extended periods, move between office and warehouse settings, and occasionally climb, stoop, or kneel to conduct inspections or address operational issues.
• Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull equipment, tools, or product samples (weighing up to 50 pounds) on an as-needed basis.
• Must have the flexibility and dexterity to safely operate or oversee the operation of warehouse equipment (e.g., forklifts, pallet jacks), in accordance with OSHA guidelines.

• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both verbal and written formats, including leading discussions, writing operational documentation, and providing guidance to teams.
• Must be able to read and interpret documents such as packing lists, pick tickets, and work orders to ensure accurate product handling and operational flow.
• Must be able to hear, understand, and respond to audible signals such as forklift horns, overhead paging systems, or emergency alarms.

Vision and Information Processing

• Must have the ability to see and interpret details such as product labels, safety signals, and data on screens or other materials, with or without corrective lenses.
• Must be able to interpret and synthesize complex data from multiple sources (e.g., KPIs, operational reports, safety logs) and apply logical reasoning to make informed decisions.

Leadership and Decision-Making

• Must be able to handle multiple concurrent priorities, manage time effectively, and direct team members under high-pressure conditions (e.g., storm response, peak shipping seasons).
• Requires the cognitive ability to evaluate operational challenges, develop strategies, and implement solutions in real time, balancing safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness.

Travel and Environment Adaptability

• Must be able to travel as needed (e.g., to conferences, vendor sites, or company facilities) by car, plane, or other modes of transportation.
• Must be adaptable to varying environmental conditions, including periods of temperature fluctuation, noise, and other factors typical of a warehouse environment.

Safety and Regulatory Compliance

• Must be able to maintain a safe work environment by adhering to all relevant safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, DOT).
• Must possess or be able to obtain relevant certifications for training others on safe equipment use and procedures and ensure ongoing compliance and retraining when necessary.
