• Shift / Schedule: 12-hour nights; 18:45 - 07:15

Job Summary

This is a contract position for a Registered Nurse in the Neuro ICU at a comprehensive stroke center. The role involves caring for a patient population with strokes (ischemic, hemorrhagic [SAH]), SDH, craniotomies, carotid stents, carotid endarterectomies, aneurysm coiling/clipping, seizures, depth electrodes, and myasthenia gravis. The unit specializes in neuro-critical care with advanced monitoring and intervention capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care to Neuro ICU patients with complex neurological conditions including acute stroke, post-neurosurgery, and other critical neurological diagnoses
• Manage ventilated patients with appropriate care protocols and monitoring
• Perform and interpret dysrhythmia management and interpretation
• Manage external ventricular drains (EVD), lumbar drains, and ICP monitoring equipment
• Administer blood products and manage central line care
• Perform IV starts and manage continuous IV sedation
• Provide care for CVA/acute stroke patients as part of the facility's comprehensive stroke center operations
• Float between unit assignments as required
• Work every other weekend as scheduled
• Maintain isolation precautions and proper use of PPE

Required Skills

• Minimum 2 years of Neuro ICU experience (strong neuro experience must be 2 years, no less; 1st time travelers not accepted)
• Ventilator management
• IV start capability
• Neuro intensive care unit expertise
• Interpretation of dysrhythmias
• Management of dysrhythmias
• Blood product administration
• Central line care and management
• Continuous IV sedation management
• CVA/acute stroke management
• External ventricular drain (EVD) experience and management
• ICP monitoring
• Post-neurosurgery patient management
• Care of ventilated patients
• Isolation precautions and proper use of PPE
• Lumbar drain experience
• Strong neuro critical care background (not general ICU)

Preferred Skills

• Arterial line management

Education Requirements

• ACLS certification required
• BCLS certification required
• NIH certification required
• EKG testing required prior to start

Required Experience

• Minimum 2 years of Neuro ICU experience
• Strong neuro critical care background required; general ICU experience alone is not acceptable
• Traveler experience: unit will not accept 1st time travelers
• Locals accepted (rate difference applies)

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

• Patient ratios: 2:1 (can flex to 3:1 during high census; nurse must be comfortable with this if needed)
• Average daily census: 11-12 patients
• Float requirement: yes
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend
• Call requirement: none
• 36 hours can be offered per week scheduling
• Unit orientation: 24 hours (2 days or 2 nights)
• Scrubs: Navy blue and white
• Special equipment used: EVD, lumbar drains, Camino, LICOX, NICOM, and Arctic Sun
• Unit systems: Pyxis, EPIC, SBAR
• Scheduling type: Per the unit needs

Important Notes

• RTO (return to origin/return to home) after booking is NOT allowed and cannot be worked out onsite
• Call-offs or additional RTO on unit could result in contract cancellation and DNR (do not rehire)
• Maximum 7 days RTO for auto offer consideration
• EKG testing must be passed prior to start for this specialty
• Unit will accept 13-week contracts only
• Stroke patients comprise one of the largest patient populations at this facility
