Job Title: Phlebotomist I – Westchester Job Description

This role provides high-quality phlebotomy services in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting, focusing on accurate specimen collection, processing, and documentation. The Phlebotomist I supports daily operations by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, troubleshooting issues, participating in training, and recommending workflow improvements to ensure safe, efficient, and patient-centered care, including care for pediatric patients.

• Perform venipunctures and other blood draws accurately and safely using straight needles and butterfly needles in a fast-paced environment.
• Collect, label, and store blood and other specimens (such as urine or fecal samples) in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
• Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients, including pediatric patients, to ensure comfort and understanding.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is complete and accurate prior to collection and processing.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, ensuring correct handling for each type of test.
• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the order or script to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
• Package specimens for transport and follow all procedures necessary to maintain specimen integrity during storage and transit.
• Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, accurately labeling each according to protocol.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as needed to maintain a safe and compliant laboratory environment.
• Update patient information and documentation in the system accurately and in a timely manner.
• Fully understand and follow physicians’ orders related to laboratory tests and specimen handling.
• Answer telephone calls, provide information, and read laboratory results as needed to address inquiries.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance standards.
• Attend annual department trainings and stay current with policies, procedures, and best practices.
• Assist with troubleshooting issues in specimen collection and processing and make recommendations to improve workflow and efficiency.
• Participate in training activities, sharing knowledge and supporting colleagues as needed.

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
• Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• Demonstrated experience performing blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Experience collecting, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storing specimens according to established procedures.
• Ability to work with pediatric patients and perform pediatric blood draws.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and communication.
• Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify orders.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to 100% accuracy in labeling and processing specimens.
• Understanding of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and laboratory safety protocols.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• 0–2 years of overall experience in a related healthcare or laboratory role, including at least 6 months of venipuncture experience.

• Experience working in a fast-paced clinical, laboratory, or hospital environment.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients.
• Comfort interacting with patients of all ages, including children, and providing a calm, reassuring presence.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and quality.
• Willingness to attend ongoing department trainings and adapt to new procedures and technologies.
• Ability to troubleshoot common issues in specimen collection and processing and contribute to workflow improvement discussions.
• Organizational skills to manage documentation, maintenance records, and patient information efficiently.

This is a non-float phlebotomy position based in West Chester, PA, working within a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. The schedule runs Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with every Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. required. The role involves frequent interaction with patients, including pediatric patients, and regular use of phlebotomy equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems. The environment requires strict adherence to safety protocols, including OSHA and DEP regulations, and involves routine decontamination and maintenance activities. Work is primarily performed indoors in a clinical or laboratory space, with a focus on maintaining specimen integrity through proper handling, labeling, and temperature-controlled storage. Professional clinical attire appropriate for a laboratory or hospital setting is expected.

This is a Contract position based out of West Chester, PA.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
