The City of Reedley invites you to apply for a Water System Utility Worker position in the Public Works Department, Water Division. This entry-level position will work under the supervision of the Water System Manager or assigned designee. This position is in the General Services Bargaining Unit (GSU) and subject to the terms and conditions of employment as specified in the GSU Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and the City's Personnel Policies & Procedures Manual. This position involves work which is physical in nature and requires familiarity with general laborer tasks. Some independent judgment and initiative is required. A Utility Worker may be required to operate some types of mobile and general construction equipment and vehicles, may work alone or as a member of a crew.

Examples of important and essential duties include adhering to all code and safety regulations, performing pick and shovel work; skilled and semi-skilled work in repairing and installing service system facilities such as water services, mains, hydrants, etc., operating and working with various air, electric, gasoline and hydraulic powered equipment such as compressors, jack hammers, generators, pumps, tampers, pipe cutters, saws, tapping machines, etc., operating City owned tools, equipment, vehicles and rental equipment; operate heavy equipment including loader, forklift, backhoe and skip loader, driving trucks hauling supplies, materials, gravel, dirt, and spoil, performing preventive maintenance procedures and minor maintenance and adjustments on equipment used, performing cutting and welding operations, assisting in the installation of many different types of water connections such as mechanical joints, flanged joints, solvent weld joints, flared joints, ring tight joints, etc., breaking up concrete or asphalt, building and setting forms, mixing and placing concrete for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, removing and restoring asphalt streets as needed, installing shoring materials in excavated areas, painting, weeding, and maintaining city well sites as needed, assisting water department personnel as needed, placing traffic control and warning signs; serving as flagman; setting up and taking down traffic cones, barricades and lights, operating chemical sprayer in assigned area to abate weeds, and performing related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Job-related and essential qualifications include a general knowledge of the identification, use and safe operation of light construction equipment and common construction hand and power tools, ability to perform physical work requiring manual dexterity, agility, physical coordination, to read, write, and speak English, to perform simple arithmetic, to understand and carry out verbal or written instructions, to drive vehicles with a manual or automatic transmission, to perform all work in a safe manner, safe driving principles and practices, and the skill to learn to operate a variety of maintenance, repair and construction equipment and tools in a safe and effective manner including manual tools and pneumatic jackhammer, compaction equipment and hand and walk behind cutting tools, perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often in all types of weather, operate motor vehicles and City equipment safely, learn, interpret, and apply the policies, procedures, laws, codes and regulations pertaining to assigned programs and functions, learn occupational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in the areas of street, sidewalk and water system maintenance, repair and construction, learn materials, methods, practices, and equipment used in the restoration of sidewalks, streets and water system maintenance and repair, learn to read, interpret, and apply technical information from manuals, drawings, specifications, layouts, blueprints and schematics, perform cement and masonry work, perform minor repairs and adjustments to tools, understand and follow oral and written instructions, establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, and other requirements.
