Job Description

The General Production Worker operates a variety of proprietary manufacturing equipment to produce powder and paste additives for animal, human, and agricultural products. This role combines hands-on machine operation, mechanical and electrical aptitude, and careful documentation to ensure products meet strict quality and safety standards. You will work in a small, independent team environment where attention to detail, consistency, and reliability are essential.

Responsibilities

• Operate a variety of proprietary machines to manufacture powder and paste additives for animals, humans, and agricultural products.

• Follow production work order specifications and process job orders accurately from start to finish.

• Process work orders by assembling ingredients and fabricating finished products according to established procedures.

• Make adjustments to equipment as needed and perform minor repairs using general mechanical and electrical knowledge.

• Use mechanical and electrical aptitude to operate, monitor, and maintain production equipment safely and efficiently.

• Inspect and measure products using tools such as tape measures and microscopes to verify quality and that all specifications are met.

• Assist in inspecting raw materials and ingredients prior to use to ensure they meet quality standards.

• Support ingredient, packaging, and finished goods inventory activities, including loading, moving, and organizing materials.

• Compute required amounts of ingredients and supplies for operations based on production schedules and work orders.

• Perform basic algebra and other math calculations to determine quantities, ratios, and percentages needed for production.

• Document time, ingredients, and processes accurately for quality control, traceability, and production records.

• Follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and all safety guidelines, including proper use of PPE and hygiene protocols.

• Participate in cleaning and general housekeeping of production lines, equipment, and work areas to maintain a food-grade environment.

• Assist with packing and packaging finished products, including repetitive filling of tubes and containers for large work orders.

• Use hand tools and basic troubleshooting skills to resolve minor equipment and process issues.

• Operate forklifts or other material handling equipment as needed to move materials and finished goods.

• Maintain high attention to detail while performing repetitive tasks and ensure consistent product quality.

• Drive between the main site and a nearby warehouse (one block away) during the workday when required.

• Work independently after receiving instructions, managing your tasks and time with minimal supervision.

Essential Skills

• At least 6 months of experience in a food production or manufacturing environment.

• At least 6 months of experience using mechanical and/or electrical aptitude, such as working on cars, troubleshooting electronics, or assisting with wiring.

• Valid driver’s license and comfort driving between nearby facilities during the workday.

• Ability to read and interpret documents, production work orders, and safety instructions in English.

• Ability to perform basic algebra, including dividing and multiplying whole numbers, working with fractions, and calculating percentages.

• General production and assembly experience in a manufacturing or warehouse setting.

• Experience with machine operation and machine operating on a production line.

• General labor skills, including loading, packing, and material handling.

• Quality control and quality assurance awareness in a manufacturing or food-grade environment.

• Mechanical aptitude and basic troubleshooting skills for equipment adjustments and minor repairs.

• High attention to detail and ability to maintain focus during repetitive, monotonous tasks.

• Comfort working around strong odors from probiotics and food-grade bacteria.

• Ability to follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and strict hygiene protocols.

• Reliability and self-starting attitude, with the ability to complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Warehouse experience, including loading, material handling, and inventory support.

• Experience with forklifts or other material handling equipment.

• Familiarity with inspection tools such as microscopes and tape measures.

• Experience in packaging operations, including filling, sealing, and labeling products.

• Comfort using hand tools for basic maintenance and adjustments.

• Experience working in a temperature-controlled, food-grade facility.

• Ability to thrive in a tight-knit, small-team environment where everyone collaborates closely.

• Comfort with independent work and non–micro-managed environments.

Work Environment

This role is based in a food-grade, temperature-controlled production facility with a small team of approximately 18 employees, including a finished goods team of about four people. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with very little overtime. The environment is independent and non-corporate, with leadership regularly present on the floor and actively involved in day-to-day operations. Work can be monotonous and repetitive, often involving filling thousands of identical tubes or containers for a single work order, so comfort with repetitive tasks is important. You may need to drive between the main site and a nearby warehouse one block away during the day. As a food-grade facility, full PPE is required: smocks, hair nets, beard nets, and safety glasses (if needed) are provided and must be worn daily, and handwashing is required when entering and exiting the facility. Dress code is casual but work-appropriate, such as jeans or yoga pants, a suitable shirt, and closed-toe shoes. You will occasionally encounter strong odors from probiotic bacteria when passing the fermentation room on the way to your workstation, though you will not work in that room directly

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of URBANDALE, IA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $19.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
