Overview Assistant-Associate Professor, Cybersecurity FLSA Classification Exempt, Probationary (tenure-track) Salary Grade/Level/Family/Range Salary Range: $55,000 - $70,000 Reports to Program Director Job Description The Division of Academic Affairs at Southern University at New Orleans, a public, historically black university, is committed to empowering and promoting the upward mobility of diverse populations of traditional and nontraditional students through quality academic programs, teaching, research, and service to achieve excellence in higher education using various teaching and learning modalities. Students and faculty are encouraged to help create a thriving academic environment at SUNO. As such, faculty of the program are expected to be committed to the standards of teaching excellence. This requirement will include the ability to teach undergraduate courses which may include evening, weekend and/or hybrid courses; advise students; engage in teaching practices with an acute focus on documenting student learning; serve on faculty committees; attend departmental, faculty and other meetings, attend College convocations. The ideal candidate will be able to teach a wide range of undergraduate courses in cybersecurity and core computing courses. Preference will be given to candidates with backgrounds and teaching experience in cybersecurity fundamentals, network security, programming, Linux, penetration testing, cloud security, cyber analytics, cyber risk management, cyber operations, contingency planning, and security architecture. In addition to teaching excellence, faculty are required to engage in scholarly activity and participate in service to the community and institution. Full-time teaching (15 semester credits) of undergraduate courses which may include evening, weekend and/or on-line courses. The candidate should have teaching experience at the college level. Teaches assigned Cybersecurity courses and associated labs; informs students in writing of instructional standards; posts and maintains office hours; participates in the assessment of student learning outcomes. Develops new courses, curriculum, instructional materials, and evaluation tools; assists with the preparation of course proposals, curriculum updates and the construction of degree/certificate programs. Applies and maintains standards of quality operating methods, processes, systems, and procedures; implements changes as necessary to maintain a successful cybersecurity program; integrates knowledge of industry trends and professional training to continuously improve program and course quality. Contributes to the maintenance, troubleshooting, and building of hardware and software necessary for the successful deployment of all Cybersecurity courses. Participates in the recruitment of prospective cybersecurity students. This includes, but is not limited to, working with partner institutions in the development and maintenance of a sustainable recruiting model. Other responsibilities include serving on college committees, advising students, supervising undergraduate student research projects, and performing other duties as assigned. It is expected that in addition to the teaching load, faculty maintain 10 hours for office work and 15 hours of service to the University. Other duties as assigned. Competencies The successful candidate should demonstrate the following competencies necessary to effectively perform the duties and responsibilities of the position: Instructional Excellence. Demonstrated ability to effectively teach undergraduate cybersecurity and computing courses using various instructional modalities, including face-to-face, hybrid, online, evening, and weekend formats. Ability to apply student-centered teaching methodologies, assess student learning outcomes, and maintain academic standards consistent with institutional expectations. Cybersecurity Technical Knowledge. Demonstrated knowledge and applied expertise in cybersecurity principles, systems, and technologies, including but not limited to network security, Linux systems, programming, penetration testing, cloud security, cyber analytics, cyber operations, security architecture, contingency planning, and cyber risk management. Ability to integrate current industry standards, emerging technologies, and best practices into instruction and curriculum development. Curriculum and Program Development. Ability to develop, revise, and enhance curriculum, instructional materials, laboratory exercises, assessment tools, and degree or certificate programs. Ability to contribute to program improvement initiatives aligned with institutional goals, workforce needs, and accreditation standards. Student Engagement and Advising. Ability to advise, mentor, and support a diverse student population through academic guidance, career mentoring, undergraduate research supervision, and student success initiatives. Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Scholarly and Professional Engagement. Demonstrated commitment to scholarly activity, professional development, research, publications, presentations, grant development, and/or continued engagement in the cybersecurity profession. Ability to maintain awareness of evolving trends and advancements within the discipline. Institutional Service and Collaboration. Ability to effectively contribute to departmental, divisional, and university committees, shared governance activities, recruitment initiatives, and institutional service responsibilities. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and external partners in support of the University’s mission. Communication and Interpersonal Effectiveness. Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with students, colleagues, administrators, and community stakeholders while maintaining professionalism, collegiality, and ethical conduct. Technology and Laboratory Support. Ability to support and maintain instructional technologies, cybersecurity laboratory environments, hardware, software, and related systems necessary for effective course delivery and student learning experiences. Work environment Office and classroom setting. Physical demands Ability to sit/stand/walk at will; Ability to climb stairs; Ability to communicate verbally and in writing; Ability to use a keyboard; and Ability to lift or carry up to 10 pounds. Travel required Up to 25%. Required education and experience A doctorate in Cybersecurity, Computer Science or Engineering, Computer Information Systems, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution by the start date of the appointment. ABD candidates are eligible. Candidates with significant industry experience, professional certifications, and an M.S. in Cybersecurity, or related disciplines are eligible. Preferred education and experience Industry experience in the candidate's field of expertise is preferred. Professional certifications (e.g. CISSP, CEH, CISM) are a plus. Published works are desired.
