Chief Engineer

SUMMARY Responsible for supervising the Chief Engineers or maintenance techs for properties in an assigned region. Ensures the repairs and maintenance of the hotel are accomplished. Directs the preventative maintenance program, repairs and renovation projects for building and grounds of the hotel. Monitors, leads, directs and supervises maintenance personnel. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Culture a respectful workplace by maintaining respect of attendance, performance, behavior and common sense and judgement. Supervise the responsibilities and performance of all Chief Engineers and Maintenance techs at each property in an assigned region. Provide maintenance training to all new hires as well as on‑going training to maintenance staff. Assign duties to maintenance staff and observe performance to ensure adherence to hotel policies and operating procedures. Assist in the selection of hotel maintenance staff. Review employee performance; conduct coaching, appraisal, and progressive discipline up to termination. Effectively and professionally communicate with co‑workers and supervisors. Ensure all fire and safety inspections are completed and any discrepancies are corrected. Administer the preventative and repair maintenance program as required, properly completing work orders on time. Record and report completed repairs and items that require further attention. Adhere to all local, state, and federal laws and safety regulations. Complete training regarding safety, security, department procedures, and service. Inform management of hazardous situations, emergencies, or threats to the safety and security of hotel guests, staff or assets. Ensure the security of all inventory, including tools, supplies, equipment, furniture, and televisions. Replenish supplies and inventory efficiently to minimize waste. Assist other departments with moving furniture and unloading supplies. Maintain and service pool and spa areas according to state and city regulations. Maintain a professional image at all times through appearance and dress. Meet with vendors and suppliers to discuss scope of, and materials used for, repair activities; obtain pricing and bids as directed. Conduct monthly, quarterly, and annual life safety inspections where allowed by local jurisdiction. Perform preventive maintenance of the major mechanical and life safety equipment at multiple properties within a geographic area or cluster. Act as a technical resource for locations regarding corrective, preventative, and routine repair and maintenance procedures and techniques such as HVAC, refrigeration, kitchen equipment, laundry equipment, electrical systems, boilers, hot water systems, and life safety systems. Conduct emergency work on HVAC, kitchen, laundry, or water systems outages. Perform routine audits of preventative maintenance programs to ensure compliance by on‑property engineers. Travel as needed to various properties for various reasons. Must obey all Federal, State, and Local transportation laws while traveling on company time. Follow company policies and procedures at all times. Ensure fair treatment and respect of employees and guests. Other duties as assigned by supervisor or management. QUALIFICATIONS Education/Experience: High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Minimum of two years supervisory experience in facilities maintenance, plant operations or engineering services for a hotel. Certification and/or License: Professional certification and licensure if required by law. Minimum Type III EPA Certification for refrigerant reclamation and charging. Valid Driver’s License required. Technical crafts: HVAC, electrical, plumbing, etc. Specialization in these trades is desired. Ability to advance knowledge in these areas is essential. Basic knowledge and experience with carpentry, plumbing, mechanical repair and painting. Proficient communication, adaptability, customer service and interpersonal skills. Attention to detail and ability to monitor contractor and subordinates’ activity. Ability to read, write and speak English. Working Conditions: Will be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays; work in a fast‑paced environment; frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration; noise level can be loud. RELATIONSHIPS Internal: General Manager, Assistant General Manager, peers, line level associates and Field Operations at the corporate level. External: Vendors (for purchasing and receiving supplies); guests (to provide customer service).
