Executive Director of Cal-Bridge

Your Role on the Team Position Description Executive Director, Cal-Bridge The University of California, Irvine seeks a dynamic executive director for its Cal-Bridge Program. The Cal-Bridge Program partners across the University of California, California State Universities, and California Community Colleges to provide a comprehensive pathway for STEM majors from undergraduate to postdoctoral and faculty positions. The executive director (ED) provides strategic leadership, implements the program vision, and manages day-to-day operations, including staff supervision, financial oversight, communication, outreach, and recruitment across multiple locations. The ED is responsible for fundraising, advocating with state government, national and private foundations, corporations, and private individuals in collaboration with the university advancement office. They oversee the program’s entire resource management, define priorities, set objectives, and align strategy with mission. The ED must also maintain and foster relationships with academic partners, promote broadening participation in STEM pathways, and ensure effective collaboration with faculty, staff, and students. What It Takes to be Successful Required: PhD in a relevant STEM or STEM‑adjacent field. Academic background and recognized expertise in one or more relevant STEM research disciplines. Demonstrated results in broadening participation in STEM pathways in higher education. Expertise in building, developing, and implementing innovative programs within a leading academic institution, with strong administrative, budgetary, human resources, and financial principles and practices. Excellent oral and written communication skills with a broad community of researchers, funding agencies, media, industrial partners, program managers, and center managers. Experience working with dynamic and diverse groups of faculty, staff, and students. Demonstrated success in fundraising through grants and/or government appropriations. Expert-level negotiation skills to collaborate with internal and external diverse constituencies. Preferred: Academic experience working and partnering with departments and schools in a broad range of disciplines. Program or executive business management experience in academic and/or government agencies. Significant track record in research, especially as related to broadening participation in STEM pathways. Experience building and coordinating educational STEM pathway programs. Faculty work demonstrating commitment to student, postdoc, and/or faculty development and to faculty and student diversity. Prior academic leadership experience (e.g., director, chair, associate dean, dean, or similar position). Considerations for Faculty Applicants If selected, faculty applicants should be aware that a leave of absence from their current role may be required to commit to a primary, full-time administrative appointment for a term of 3–5 years at UCI.
