Director, Principal Giving (East)

Job Overview The External Relations department of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) focuses on Private fundraising, Communications, and Advocacy. The Principal Giving unit works with High‑Net‑Worth Individuals. The Director of Principal Giving East will lead the Principal Giving East team, manage a portfolio of donors and prospects, and collaborate with senior leadership to secure and steward significant, multi‑year gifts in the Eastern United States. Major Responsibilities Supervise a team of front‑line fundraisers, inspiring and challenging them to optimize gift size and impact through mentorship and innovative relationship management. Provide dynamic and effective thought leadership for the Principal Giving East team’s efforts to increase financial revenue and private sector engagement. Develop and support the team’s cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of a large, growing portfolio of major donors and prospects. Build a strong fundraising structure including a prospect pipeline and donor giving tracks for the IRC. Collaborate with IRC’s senior leadership, program staff, and colleagues to create compelling cases for philanthropic investment. Partner with the Senior Director to develop a bold strategic plan, set annual goals, and establish standards, tools, and procedures for donor engagement. Lead the direct and indirect management of the Principal Giving East Team, comprising up to 7 individuals. Manage a small portfolio of principal giving capacity donors, prospects, and suspects to retain donors and secure increasing gift sizes. Undertake special projects as requested. Candidate Requirements 10+ years of non‑profit fundraising experience with expertise in ultra‑high net‑worth individual fundraising. Demonstrated history of empowering and supporting front‑line fundraisers. Preferred Experience & Skills Consistent record of securing 7 and 8+ figure gifts from a multifaceted donor portfolio. Experience leading and supervising frontline fundraisers. Ability to lead, motivate, and develop a strong, complex team. Consistent record of developing blended and multi‑year funding opportunities. Outstanding communication skills, including writing, listening, verbal presentation, and speaking. Ability to develop creative, nuanced donor strategy in partnership with program staff and senior leadership. Adaptable to change in a fast‑paced environment while prioritizing donor needs. Ability to collaborate respectfully across internal teams and distances, gaining support for initiatives. Ability to identify, build, and implement processes critical to effective donor relationships. Ability to analyze and interpret financial data. Proficiency with CRM systems. Dedication to fundraising for international development, humanitarian causes, human rights, gender and racial equality, social justice, and U.S. immigrant communities. Working Environment This is a hybrid role requiring an average presence in the NYC office 2–3 days a week combined with remote/flex‑time work. Compensation Pay Range: $160,000 – $180,000 (U.S. based candidates). Offers will be calibrated by location, experience, and skills relative to job requirements.
