Intermittent Interpreter

INTERMITTENT INTERPRETER This recruitment is open to individuals who have worked 45 days or more in a calendar year with the Superior Court of California, County of Orange as an independent interpreter contractor. LOCATIONS The work locations include Santa Ana, Orange, Fullerton, Westminster, and Newport Beach. This position may be assigned to one or all of the above locations. About The Position Court interpreters perform a wide variety of language interpretation activities on an assigned and as‑needed basis for the Superior Courts of California and parties to proceedings, including witnesses, defendants, attorneys, other court personnel, and the public. This is a single‑level classification. Employees perform consecutive and simultaneous interpretation of courtroom proceedings and other related interpreting services as needed, and also perform sight translation as required. Responsibilities Interpret from and into English and applicable non‑English languages using simultaneous and consecutive modes at court proceedings and other court‑related departments at the direction of the court. Make sight translations for the benefit of the court of documents such as court petitions, reports, waivers, felony disposition statement forms, and other documents. Interpret for judges, attorneys, court staff, and other court‑related departments at the direction of the court. Notify the court of any issues or situations that may impede performance. Research and understand terminology used in court and court functions, including legal, technological, scientific, and medical terminology. Review the daily docket and receive daily calendar assignments from the Trial Court Interpreter Coordinator (or other) and accurately complete daily activity logs or other required documentation. Perform other language interpretation duties as assigned, such as providing general court information at an information counter to the non‑English speaking public and processing documents related to interpretation. Minimum Qualifications Possession of an "Invitation to Participate for Employment" letter from the Superior Court of California, County of Orange. Possession of a valid Certificate as a "Certified Court Interpreter" or "Registered Court Interpreter" issued by the Judicial Council of California on behalf of the State of California. Possession of a valid California driver’s license or ability to use alternative transportation to carry out job‑related essential functions.
