Robert Half is seeking a strong Payroll Manager Consultant for our non-profit client.
The Interim Payroll Manager will oversee and stabilize payroll for a nonprofit organization, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and proper grant/program cost allocation. This role partners with HR and Finance to support payroll operations, audits, and process improvements. This interim Payroll opportunity will be located onsite in Claremont, CA.
Key Responsibilities
-Manage semi-monthly payroll (ADP Workforce Now; and ~200 employees)
-Oversee payroll changes, deductions, and compliance with CA wage & hour laws
-Ensure accurate allocation of payroll across grants, programs, and cost centers
-Lead payroll reconciliations (benefits, taxes, GL tie-outs)
-Support audits, including financial audits and Form 990 schedules
-Maintain HRIS data integrity and strengthen internal controls
-Identify and implement process improvements and documentation
-Partner with HR, Finance, and program teams on payroll-related matters
Qualifications
* 7+ years of payroll experience, including management/oversight
* Nonprofit experience with grant-funded payroll allocations
* ADP Workforce Now expertise
* Strong knowledge of California payroll regulations
* Experience with payroll reconciliations and audit support
* Advanced Excel
• At least 7 years of payroll experience, including responsibility for leading or overseeing payroll operations.• Hands-on expertise with full-cycle payroll processing and strong proficiency in ADP Workforce Now.
• Background in nonprofit payroll, including experience allocating labor costs to grant-funded programs and multiple cost centers.
• Strong working knowledge of California payroll, wage, and hour compliance requirements.
• Experience completing payroll reconciliations and supporting internal or external audit activities.
• Advanced Excel skills for analysis, reconciliation, and payroll reporting.
• Ability to work cross-functionally with HR, Finance, and operational teams in a collaborative environment.
• Additional experience with fund accounting or bilingual Spanish and English communication is valued.
