Position Overview Senior Attorney (SES) – Office of the General Counsel, Florida Department of Education, Tallahassee, Turlington Building. Salary: $70,000–$90,000. Responsibilities Handle litigation assigned by the General Counsel – represent the Department in state and federal courts and administrative tribunals. Represent the State Board of Education, the Commissioner of Education, and the Department of Education in litigation where any of the above may be a party. Advise and consult with Department personnel on a wide range of legal issues. Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, agreements, amendments, leases, and other commercial documents. Write legal advisory opinions as assigned by the General Counsel. Assist with procurement activities, labor relations, scholarship programs, ethics matters, and other matters encountered by a state agency. Attend meetings and conferences to advance expertise in education law. Perform other related tasks as assigned by the General Counsel. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Prepare and maintain records. Understand and apply Florida statutes and FDOE rules and policies. Problem‑solving ability. Effective verbal and written communication. Planning, organizing, and coordinating work assignments. Produce accurate, timely information under tight timeframes; balance competing priorities. Establish and maintain effective working relationships. Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel). Minimum Qualifications Admission to the Florida Bar. Two years of professional experience in the practice of law, legal research, teaching law, or administrative/judicial hearings. Additional Requirements Selective Services Registration: Male applicants born on or after October 1, 1962 must be registered (or exempted) before age 26.
