Water Reclamation Facility Maintenance II

The Water Reclamation Facility Maintenance II is an intermediate-level skilled technical position responsible for the inspection, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and general upkeep of the City's water reclamation treatment equipment, facilities, and related infrastructure. Under the supervision of the Water Reclamation Facility Superintendent or designated supervisor, the Maintenance II works directly with facility operators to maintain the mechanical reliability and continuous operation of treatment processes and equipment. The employee is expected to demonstrate proficiency in facility maintenance, pumps, motors, valves, piping, mechanical equipment, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, equipment operation, safety practices, and maintenance documentation. The Maintenance II is also expected to develop and maintain a working knowledge of water reclamation treatment processes and may perform operational duties as trained and assigned. This position is part of the City's water reclamation career progression and provides opportunities to further develop both maintenance and operational competencies, including progression toward State of Tennessee wastewater treatment operator certification. The Maintenance II works assigned schedules, weekends, holidays, overtime, on-call, and emergency assignments as required to maintain continuous facility operations.

Examples Of Duties

Preventive & Corrective Maintenance

• Performs preventive and corrective maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, repair, installation, and replacement of equipment associated with water reclamation treatment processes and facilities.
• Performs scheduled preventive maintenance including lubrication, adjustment, cleaning, inspection, equipment exercising, component replacement, and other manufacturer- or facility-recommended maintenance.
• Diagnoses routine mechanical problems and equipment failures and performs appropriate repairs within the employee's level of training, competency, and authority.
• Assists with more complex mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, controls, and equipment troubleshooting and repairs.
• Performs pump removal, installation, cleaning, de-ragging, inspection, and repair as required.
• Performs basic fabrication, piping, plumbing, mechanical assembly, equipment installation, and construction-related activities as trained and assigned.

Mechanical Equipment & Facility Systems

• Inspects, services, troubleshoots, repairs, removes, and installs pumps, motors, blowers, valves, gates, piping, gearboxes, bearings, chemical-feed equipment, mechanical equipment, and related facility components.
• Inspects treatment structures, buildings, equipment, piping, supports, access points, safety equipment, and other facility infrastructure and identifies conditions requiring maintenance or corrective action.
• Uses hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, lifting equipment, and other tools necessary to perform facility maintenance and repairs.

Maintenance Documentation & Work Management

• Maintains accurate preventive maintenance, inspection, repair, equipment, parts, and work-order records using established documentation and computerized maintenance systems.
• Coordinates maintenance activities with facility operators to minimize process interruptions and ensure equipment is safely removed from and returned to service.
• Maintains shop areas, tools, equipment, parts, storage areas, buildings, and work areas in a clean, organized, and serviceable condition.

Safety, Compliance & Chemical Handling

• Understands and follows equipment isolation, lockout/tagout, confined-space, chemical-handling, and other established safety procedures.
• Assists with chemical deliveries and safely handles, transfers, stores, and monitors treatment chemicals and operational supplies as assigned.
• Recognizes and reports abnormal equipment or process conditions, safety hazards, spills, and potential regulatory compliance concerns.
• Performs duties in accordance with applicable environmental regulations, safety requirements, City policies, manufacturer recommendations, and established operating and maintenance procedures.

Grounds & Equipment Operations

• Performs grounds maintenance and safely operates mowers, lawn equipment, skid steers, tractors, utility vehicles, and other equipment necessary for facility maintenance.
• Operates light, medium, and heavy equipment as trained and authorized to support maintenance and facility activities.

Treatment Process & Facility Operations Support

• Maintains a working knowledge of the facility's treatment processes and assists operators with facility rounds, equipment operation, process monitoring, sampling, cleaning, and other operational responsibilities as trained and assigned.
• Reads gauges, meters, equipment displays, SCADA information, and alarms as necessary to evaluate equipment operation and assist facility operators.
• Assists with starting, stopping, isolating, and returning treatment equipment to service in coordination with facility operations.
• Coordinates maintenance activities with facility operators to minimize process interruptions and ensure equipment is safely removed from and returned to service.

Emergency Response

• Responds to equipment failures, power interruptions, severe weather, high-flow events, process upsets, and other emergency conditions requiring maintenance support.
• Recognizes and reports abnormal equipment or process conditions, safety hazards, spills, and potential regulatory compliance concerns.

Team Support & Training

• Assists less-experienced employees with routine maintenance tasks and reinforces established maintenance and safety procedures as assigned.

Regulatory, Policy & Procedural Responsibilities

• Performs duties in accordance with applicable environmental regulations, safety requirements, City policies, manufacturer recommendations, and established operating and maintenance procedures.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Experience in mechanical maintenance, industrial maintenance, wastewater treatment, water reclamation, utilities, equipment maintenance, construction, or equivalent experience sufficient to demonstrate proficiency in the essential functions of the position.
• Successful progression from an entry-level Water Reclamation Facility Maintenance position may satisfy the experience requirement when the employee has demonstrated the required maintenance and operational competencies.
• Possession of a valid State of Tennessee Commercial Driver License (CDL) is desired but not required.
• Employees are encouraged and may be required as part of career progression to pursue applicable State of Tennessee Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification.
• Must obtain and maintain required safety and equipment-operation training applicable to assigned responsibilities.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities for Successful Job Performance:

• Knowledge of pumps, motors, valves, piping, blowers, chemical-feed systems, and mechanical equipment used in water reclamation facilities.
• Skill in performing preventive maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, minor repairs, component replacement, and equipment installation.
• Proficiency in safely using hand tools, power tools, mechanical tools, lifting equipment, and maintenance equipment.
• Mechanical aptitude and ability to apply basic mechanical principles to diagnose equipment problems and determine corrective actions.
• Ability to read and understand equipment manuals, procedures, diagrams, specifications, work orders, gauges, meters, and technical information.
• Basic knowledge of electrical and instrumentation principles sufficient to recognize problems and assist qualified personnel with troubleshooting.
• Basic understanding of water reclamation treatment processes and the relationship between equipment operation and treatment performance.
• Ability to perform assigned operational duties, including equipment operation, facility rounds, process observations, sampling, and recordkeeping.
• Ability to coordinate equipment shutdown, maintenance, and return-to-service activities with facility operators.
• Knowledge of and ability to follow lockout/tagout, confined-space, PPE, chemical safety, and other applicable safe-work practices.
• Ability to identify equipment deficiencies, abnormal conditions, and safety concerns and take appropriate action within established procedures and authority.
• Ability to maintain accurate maintenance, inspection, equipment, and work-order records.
• Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and respond appropriately during routine and emergency maintenance activities.
• Ability and willingness to develop technical knowledge and competency in facility maintenance and water reclamation operations.

Physical Requirements:

• Stand and walk for extended periods on level, uneven, wet, or slippery surfaces.
• Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, grasp, twist, and perform repetitive movements associated with equipment maintenance.
• Climb and descend stairs and ladders and access equipment located above or below grade.
• Safely use hand tools, power tools, mechanical tools, lifting equipment, and treatment equipment.
