Speech Language Specialist

The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the positions of Speech Language Specialist within the Office of Early Childhood. The position is pending availability of funds and Board of Education approval.

The Speech Language Specialist will assess children in the district who have suspected language, articulation, fluency and/or voice disorders. They will provide direct and indirect services to reduce or eliminate speech and language difficulties that adversely affect a student's academic performance and are determined to be outside the range of acceptable variations. They will also case manage and provide therapeutic interventions for all students classified as Eligible for Speech and Language Services. Additionally, they will collaborate and function as a responsible member of the Child Study.

Qualifications and requirements include an appropriate New Jersey Department of Education Standard Certificate or eligible for an Emergency certificate as deemed necessary by the New Jersey Department of Education. A Masters or higher degree in speech-language pathology, or its equivalent, from a regionally accredited college/university is also required.

Basic functions and responsibilities include providing direct and indirect services to reduce or eliminate speech and language difficulties, case managing and providing therapeutic interventions for all students classified as Eligible for Speech and Language Services, collaborating and functioning as a responsible member of the Child Study, evaluating children identified through a standardized assessment process and/or functional process to determine speech and/or language functioning and impact on educational performance, generating a written professional report of the evaluation to include State and district mandated components, participating in CST identification meetings involving suspected language disability students, preparing Individual Education Programs, reevaluations and annual reviews for students Eligible for Speech Language Services, following federal laws, state mandates and district policies and procedures, scheduling students and providing speech language services as mandated by the IEP, preparing and maintaining all case records for Eligible for Speech Language Services students, preparing and maintaining ongoing progress records for each student receiving speech language services, providing written input to the IEP of the ESERS student's Present Level of Academic and Functional Performance in the area of communication, goals and objectives, frequency duration, and group size, utilizing State and district eligibility guidelines in determining eligibility for speech language services, completing State and district reports as required, consulting with Nurse regarding hearing evaluation, consulting with administrator, teachers, parents, and staff, ordering and maintaining equipment, materials and supplies, participating in Continuing Education in the area of Speech and Language, being knowledgeable in and utilizing district's technological/electronic programs and equipment, and performing other duties as assigned.

The position reports to the Office of Early Childhood. Salary is $72,250 - $112,250 for a ten (10) month employment period. Affiliation is with the Newark Teachers Union.
