Senior Welding Engineer

Our client, an advanced energy technology organization developing next-generation power generation systems, is looking for a Senior Weld Engineer. This role will support the development, qualification, and testing of welding processes and materials used in highly regulated energy generation systems.

Location: Bellevue, WA - Onsite

Duration: 12 Months

Compensation: $56 - $95 per hour.

Additional Compensation: This position is not eligible for bonus or incentive compensation.

Summary:

The Senior Weld Engineer will work as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team focused on materials processing, supplier development, and welding technology qualification for advanced energy systems. This position will lead weld process development efforts, support supplier qualification activities, oversee testing programs, and generate the technical data required to support component design and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:
• Develop and qualify welding techniques for critical reactor and energy system components.
• Lead weld process development and qualification activities for ferritic-martensitic steels, austenitic stainless steels, and nickel-based alloys using technologies such as resistance pressure welding, TIG welding, and laser welding.
• Generate welding specifications, procedures, and engineering documentation.
• Provide technical leadership to suppliers and support supplier qualification and development initiatives.
• Oversee weld equipment operation and fabrication of test coupons supporting process qualification programs.
• Develop destructive and nondestructive examination criteria for weld certification.
• Design and execute testing programs including mechanical properties, burst testing, creep, creep-fatigue, thermal aging, irradiation effects, and environmental exposure testing.
• Analyze test results and prepare technical reports supporting design and qualification activities.
• Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to ensure materials development efforts meet program objectives.
• Participate in supplier audits and quality assurance activities aligned with industry standards.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline with at least 6 years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
• Strong understanding of metallurgy, including fabrication and thermomechanical processing of ferrous and nonferrous alloys.
• Experience developing technical specifications, Statements of Work (SOWs), Requests for Proposal (RFPs), and managing supplier technical performance.
• Experience with welding process development, qualification, and testing.
• Ability to work independently and solve complex technical problems.
• Strong technical writing and communication skills.

Nice to Have:
• Experience working within regulated quality systems such as NQA-1, ISO 9001, or AS9100.
• Knowledge of ferritic-martensitic steels, stainless steels, and nickel-based alloys.
• Experience with nuclear, aerospace, defense, or other highly regulated industries.
• Familiarity with materials performance modeling and validation testing.
• Understanding of reactor systems and the effects of operating environments on material performance.
