Hospital Lab Technician 1 - Part Time

Responsibilities Task A: Phlebotomy/Specimen Collections – Collect and process specimens from both inpatient and outpatient clients. Perform venipuncture and skin puncture as required, administer glucose tolerance tests, prepare smears and peripheral blood slides, handle blood bank specimens, participate in bone marrow collections, and maintain accurate records. Follow hand hygiene, patient identification, volume and container requirements, use the Clinical Laboratory Online Lab Manual, and adhere to infection control policies. Manage supplies, assist in specimen transport, and document codes and patient draw records. Task B: Patient Greeting/Reception – Greet patients warmly, introduce self, explain the expected duration of the test, describe the procedure, thank patients, and ask if there is anything else needed. Task C: Processing Orders in the Hospital and Laboratory APEX/Beaker System – Validate orders before collection, display order lists on the mobile workstation, coordinate with nurses, print or generate labels, prioritize STAT, timed, and routine orders, process both inpatient and outpatient orders, and ensure accurate computer entries. Minimize computer errors and follow established protocols for paper requisitions. Task D: STAT or Routine Processing – Prioritize STAT specimens, label and aliquot accurately, maintain a steady pace to complete labeling within the required time, verify labels, and provide clear written instructions to analytical sections as needed. Task E: Aliquoting of Urine Collections – Verify urine labels, aliquot into appropriate tubes or containers, manage 24‑hour collections, process routine and STAT urine specimens within the required time frames, report delays, and notify the supervisor if tasks cannot be completed on time. Task F: Responses to Inquiries/Communications – Communicate non‑technical information such as collection instructions, turnaround times, and test results. Use the Laboratory Manual and price files as references. Maintain professionalism and consult supervisors when information is not available. Task G: Telephone Duty – Answer all telephone extensions promptly, identify the unit, and offer assistance within the third ring. Task H: Bone Marrow Collection – Assist physicians in outpatient clinics by preparing bone marrow smears, preserving specimens, and handling paperwork and labeling according to protocols. Task I: Pneumatic Tube – Check and return contents of pneumatic tubes from the Hematology clinic promptly, ensuring timely delivery to the appropriate department. Task J: Computer Downtime – Process specimens manually during computer downtime, write patient and test information clearly on pour‑off tubes, and follow downtime protocols with minimal supervision. Task K: Additional Unspecified Duties – Perform other duties or projects as assigned within the Clinical Laboratory and Phlebotomy sections. Required Qualifications Graduation from high school or possession of a General Education Diploma (GED). Two years of laboratory experience or two years of college coursework in the natural, physical, or social sciences plus one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates knowledge and abilities essential to the role. Current phlebotomy certificate issued by the California Department of Public Health Laboratory Field Services. Experience performing phlebotomy on a broad range of patient types. Demonstrated computer skills, human relations, and effective communication skills. Ability to work well under pressure. Flexibility to work at all UCSF Medical Center locations and at off‑site locations as assigned, with varying schedules. Proficiency with PC, Windows, Word, Excel, and related software. Preferred Qualifications Previous knowledge of and experience in a clinical laboratory setting and familiarity with medical terminology. Previous phlebotomy experience in an inpatient hospital setting. Required Licenses/Certifications Current California State Phlebotomy Certificate.
