We're looking for a Software Engineering Manager - Backend with deep full-stack and backend expertise to lead a high-performing team delivering scalable, resilient systems on AWS.This role is for someone who thinks in systems — someone who can design serverless architectures, drive API strategy, mentor engineers to do their best work, and partner closely with Product and Front-End Engineering to deliver reliable platforms that power customer-facing experiences. You'll own the backend and platform engineering strategy for your domain, driving technical decisions while keeping your team moving fast and building with quality.This position is based in Plano, TX. The selected candidate will be expected to reside within a commutable distance of this location.Key ResponsibilitiesLead, grow, and retain a team of full-stack and backend engineers — hiring top talent, running performance reviews, coaching, and creating clear paths for career developmentOwn the backend architecture and technical direction for your domain, ensuring scalability, reliability, and maintainability across all servicesDrive engineering excellence through code quality standards, API design conventions, testing practices, and continuous improvementPartner with Product, Design, and Front-End Engineering to define and deliver features from concept to productionChampion system reliability, observability, and security as first-class engineering concernsEstablish and enforce best practices around API design, data modeling, event-driven patterns, and serverless architecture on AWSCollaborate with platform, infrastructure, and security teams to optimize CI/CD pipelines, deployment strategies, and cloud cost managementCommunicate clearly with stakeholders at all levels — translating technical complexity into business impactBalance strategic thinking with hands-on involvement — you're comfortable reviewing PRs, unblocking engineers, and diving into hard problems when neededMonitor and improve key system metrics: latency, error rates, availability, and cost efficiencyWhat You BringBachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience10+ years of software engineering experience with a strong backend or full-stack focus, including 3+ years in an engineering management or tech lead roleDeep expertise in designing and building serverless architectures on AWS, including:Lambda for computeAPI Gateway (REST and APIs) for service exposureDynamoDB or Aurora Serverless for data persistenceStep Functions or other workflow orchestration toolsEventBridge, SQS, or SNS for event-driven and async communicationS3 for object storage and data lake patternsCloudFront for API acceleration and edge cachingStrong proficiency in TypeScript and/or Python for backend services — you can write or review production-quality code and hold your team to the same standardProven ability to design RESTful and GraphQL APIs, with a strong grasp of API contract design, versioning, error handling, and type-safe tooling (e.g., OpenAPI, GraphQL Code Generator, tRPC)Solid understanding of Infrastructure as Code using AWS CDK, CloudFormation, or TerraformExperience with observability and monitoring tooling: CloudWatch, X-Ray, Datadog, or similar — you know how to instrument services and respond to incidentsStrong understanding of security best practices: IAM policies, least-privilege access, secrets management (Secrets Manager, SSM Parameter Store), and data encryption at rest and in transitExperience with testing practices: unit testing, integration testing, contract testing, and load testing for distributed systemsFamiliarity with containerized workloads (ECS Fargate, Docker) for services that don't fit the serverless modelExcellent communication skills — you can articulate technical tradeoffs clearly to both engineers and non-technical stakeholdersAdded Bonus If You HaveMaster's degree in Computer Science or related fieldExperience in the financial services, banking, or insurance industryExperience designing multi-account AWS architectures with proper governance and guardrails (AWS Organizations, Control Tower)Familiarity with data streaming patterns using Kinesis, MSK (Managed Kafka), or similarExperience with GenAI integration on the backend (e.g., Bedrock, SageMaker endpoints, LLM orchestration patterns)Experience with CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation (CodePipeline, GitHub Actions, or similar)Hands-on experience with GraphQL federation or API gateway patterns for composing multiple servicesAWS certifications (Solutions Architect, Developer Associate, or DevOps Engineer)What We'll BringDuring your interview process, our team can fill you in on all the details of our industry-leading benefits and career development opportunities.
