SUMMARY:  

The Director of Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) is a senior finance leader responsible for driving the organization’s financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and analytical functions. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this role provides strategic and operational financial insight to support decision making across grant funded programs and fee for service business lines.

The Director of FP&A partners closely with executive leadership, program leaders, development, and operations to ensure financial sustainability, grant compliance, and growth of mission driven services in a complex nonprofit environment with multiple funding sources.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE :

·         Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field.

·         8–10+ years of progressive finance experience, including FP&A leadership.

·         Demonstrated experience in nonprofit finance, including grant funded programs.

·         Strong financial modeling, budgeting, and forecasting skills.

·         Advanced proficiency in Excel and financial reporting tools.

·         Ability to communicate complex financial concepts clearly to non financial stakeholders.

PREFERRED

·         Master’s degree (MBA, MPA, or similar).

·         Certification such as CPA, CFA, or CGMA.

·         Experience in organizations with both grant funding and fee‐for‐service revenue .

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Financial Planning, Budgeting & Forecasting

• Develop and lead the annual organizational budgeting process, including program‐level, grant‐specific, and fee‐for‐service budgets.
• Develop rolling forecasts and multi‐year financial projections to support strategic planning and sustainability.
• Build and maintain financial models to evaluate new programs, contracts, and business opportunities.
• Integrate grant award assumptions, indirect cost recoveries, and earned revenue projections into consolidated forecasts.

Financial Analysis & Decision Support

• Provide timely financial analysis to executive leadership and program leaders, including:

o    Variance analysis (budget vs. actual)

o    Margin and cost analysis for fee‐for‐service programs

o    Grant spending

• Translate complex financial data into clear, actionable insights for non‐financial leaders.
• Support pricing and costing strategies for fee‐for‐service products to ensure financial viability and mission alignment.
• Evaluate financial risks and opportunities related to funding concentration, reimbursement timing, and grant restrictions.

Grant & Program Financial Oversight

• Partner with grants management and program teams to ensure accurate budgeting, tracking, and forecasting of restricted grant funds.
• Monitor grant financial performance, ensuring compliance with funder requirements and internal policies.
• Support grant proposals and renewals by developing program budgets, financial narratives, and cost allocations.
• Analyze indirect cost recovery and assist with maintaining compliant cost allocation methodologies.

Reporting & Executive Communication

• Prepare financial dashboards, board‐level reports, and management presentations.
• Support the CFO in presenting financial results and projections to the Board of Directors, Finance Committee and Program Officers and Directors.
• Develop standardized FP&A reporting tools and metrics to improve visibility into organizational performance.
• Ensure consistency and accuracy between FP&A reporting and accounting results.

Systems, Processes & Controls

• Lead continuous improvement of FP&A processes, tools, and financial models.
• Partner with accounting to ensure alignment between budgeting, forecasting, and the general ledger.
• Support financial systems enhancements related to budgeting, reporting, and analytics.
• Strengthen internal controls related to budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.

Leadership & Collaboration

• Manage and develop FP&A staff, providing coaching, feedback, and professional development.
• Foster strong cross‐functional relationships with program, development, operations, and executive teams.
• Serve as a thought partner to senior leadership on financial strategy and organizational growth.
