Teacher Aide School Year 2026-27 (NBOE)

Position Teacher Aide – Various Newark Board of Education Locations – Full‑time (6 hours). This role is provisional under the New Jersey Civil Service and requires a 120‑day probation period. Responsibilities Provide direct aide to classroom teachers, assisting with classroom organization, health and physical education, laboratory and audiovisual preparation, reading instruction, and singing and dancing activities. Monitor the classroom when the teacher leaves briefly. Arrange indoor games. Correct standardized and informal tests. Assist absent or struggling students with work assignments. Work with individual children or small groups to develop basic skills. Support drill activities with word, phrase, and number flash cards. Perform clerical duties such as taking attendance, typing, copying, and maintaining non‑confidential records. Collect money and manage student behavior in the lunchroom. Prepare bulletin boards. Aid disabled children. Help maintain decorum in cafeteria, playground, study halls, gym, and locker rooms. Maintain overall classroom supervision. Direct children to buses. Learn to use electronic and/or manual recording systems. Float between classrooms or schools as needed. Qualifications Sixty (60) semester‑hour credits from an institution of higher education, or Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university, or Demonstrated ability via a formal state or local academic assessment in teaching skills for reading, writing, and mathematics (or readiness equivalents) per NCLB requirements. Valid New Jersey driver’s license if vehicle operation is essential. Knowledge & Abilities Knowledge of teaching and school practices affecting children. Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Ability to work with a variety of people. Ability to establish and maintain accurate records. Proficiency with electronic and/or manual recording and information systems. Strong reading, writing, speaking, and communication skills in English; knowledge of American Sign Language or Braille may be considered.
