Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) Open Continuous
United States Attorneys' Offices
Summary The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia (USAO-DC) is unique in its size and the scope of its work, serving as both the local and federal prosecutor for the nation's capital. Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSA) assigned to the Criminal Division prosecute a broad range of U.S. Code violations in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. Duties and Responsibilities The Criminal Division investigates and prosecutes criminal cases in the U.S. District Court, with jurisdiction over violent crime, child exploitation, human trafficking, drug trafficking, fraud, government corruption, cybercrime, terrorism, sanctions violations, espionage, and other threats to D.C. and the nation. The division includes several sections: Asset Forfeiture Unit: Utilizes criminal, civil, and administrative tools to punish and deter criminal activity by depriving criminals of property and recovering assets. Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking (CEHT) Section: Handles internet‑based crimes against children, commercial sex trafficking, labor trafficking, and domestic violence, including victim interviews, coordination with law enforcement, and drafting of search warrants. Federal Major Crimes (FMC) Section: Focuses on high‑tempo arrest‑driven prosecutions of firearms, controlled substances, violent crime sprees, robberies, and other federal offenses in D.C. Fraud, Public Corruption, and Civil Rights (FPCCR) Section: Prosecutes complex white‑collar crimes, fraud against government agencies, money laundering, cyber‑enabled fraud, public corruption, and civil rights offenses. National Security (NS) Section: Investigates and prosecutes activities threatening national security, including terrorism, hostages, sanctions violations, espionage, and cyber offenses involving state actors or terrorist organizations. Violent Crime and Narcotic Trafficking (VCNT) Section: Disrupts and dismantles networks involved in serious violence and large‑scale firearms and drug trafficking, using intelligence‑driven investigations and prosecutions. Responsibilities and assignments increase with training and experience. Requirements Initial appointment is conditional upon a satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication (fingerprint, credit and tax checks, drug testing). Appointment is temporary, not to exceed 14 months from the effective date, and will be converted to a permanent appointment after a favorable full‑field background investigation. Failure to obtain a favorable adjudication may result in removal from federal service. Once converted to a permanent position, a two‑year probationary period applies. Failure to perform during this period may result in removal from federal service. Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must be registered with the Selective Service System or be exempt. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance with eligibility for Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access unless otherwise noted. Assistant United States Attorneys must reside within the District of Columbia or within 25 miles thereof (USAO Residency Requirement). All initial attorney appointments are made on a 14‑month (temporary) basis pending favorable adjudication of a background investigation. Occasional travel may be required. Qualifications Required Qualifications: J.D. degree (or equivalent), active membership in good standing of a U.S. bar, at least one year post‑J.D. legal or other relevant experience (minimum three years preferred), U.S. citizen or national. Preferred Qualifications: Extensive experience as a prosecutor with complex investigations, substantive writing, and multiple jury trials; judicial clerkship and federal prosecutor experience preferred; demonstrated commitment to public service, high moral character, sound judgment, strong work ethic, superior communication and advocacy skills, exceptional research and writing ability, thorough legal and factual analysis, teamwork, and ability to work independently in a demanding environment. Security and Residency Requirements Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance with eligibility for SCI access (depending on assignment).
