Assistant Director of Threat Assessment

The Assistant Director of Threat Assessment plays a key role in advancing the university’s ability to identify, assess, and respond to concerning behaviors through a proactive, team-based approach. This position supports a high-volume, dynamic caseload while helping ensure timely follow-up, consistent communication, and continuity of care across cases that often require ongoing monitoring and coordination. The Assistant Director will contribute to developing outreach efforts, improving reporting pathways, and supporting early intervention strategies that enhance campus safety.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Considerable knowledge of behavioral threat assessment principles, including pathway to violence and identification, evaluation, and management of individuals of concern
- Considerable knowledge of violence risk factors and warning behaviors
- Familiarity with multidisciplinary threat assessment or behavioral intervention team models
- Understanding of applicable laws, regulations, and best practices related to privacy, information sharing, and duty to warn/protect
- Ability to assess complex situations, synthesize information from multiple sources, and make informed, defensible recommendations
- Strong case management skills, including documentation, follow-up, and coordination across stakeholders
- Ability to manage a high-volume caseload with competing priorities while maintaining attention to detail
- Skill in building collaborative relationships with diverse partners, including law enforcement, clinical providers, faculty, and administrators
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to convey sensitive information clearly and professionally
- Ability to engage with individuals in crisis using de-escalation and problem-solving approaches
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion, and professionalism when handling sensitive or confidential information
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Commitment to proactive, prevention-focused approaches to safety and risk management
Additional Considerations (supplemental knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience, licensure, certification)
- Certified Threat Manager ( CTM ) through Association for Threat Assessment Professionals ( ATAP ), or eligibility to sit for CTM Exam.
- Certification in the use of Structured Professional Judgement Tools, such as the Workplace Assessment for Violence Risk ( WAVR 21).
- Considerable experience working with sensitive and confidential information.
- Considerable knowledge of stalking, intimate partner violence, and associated risk factors.
- Considerable knowledge of open-source intelligence ( OSINT ) methods and tools to identify, collect, and assess publicly available information relevant to behavioral threat assessment and risk evaluation.
- Basic experience working in behavioral threat assessment and management.
- Some experience working in a higher education field.
- Some experience working for a law enforcement agency.
- Membership in Association for Threat Assessment Professionals ( ATAP )
- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, psychology, social work, sociology, counseling, public administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
