School Counselor Temporary LOA (0.5 FTE)

Licensed School Counselor to help students to thrive and succeed in high school as well as support plans for post secondary options. Temporary assignment for staff member on leave of absence during first semester (Monday, August 10, 2026 through Friday, December 18, 2026).

Qualifications: Current Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with an endorsement as a School Counselor at the high school grade level. Bilingual Spanish/Urdu Speaking Preferred.

Reports To: Principal and School Counseling Department Chair of the building assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Monitor the overall progress of the student in educational development, career planning, and personal relationships through the implementation of an established guidance program and initiate adjustments in program and service when needed. Be accessible and initiate communication with students, parents, referral agencies and appropriate school personnel. Provide information on curriculum and graduation requirements while assisting students with enrollment and the development of a four-year plan. Provide general information about post-secondary opportunities. Counsel students as they face academic, personal or social problems that are impeding their educational progress and assist them to achieve success. Provide secondary school information and recommendations as needed. Administer tests and interpret results for students, parents, and school personnel. Assist students in the development of appropriate career plans. Collect, prepare, maintain, and assist in the effective use of student records. Orient freshmen and transfer students to school. Make referrals to appropriate in-school personnel and outside agencies (e.g., social worker, psychologist, family services). Provide crisis intervention for students when possible. Maintains the highest level of ethical and professional demeanor with students and staff consistent with the Sexual Harassment, Equal Educational Opportunity, Ethics, Use of Electronic Media, and other appropriate policies of the District. Demonstrates effective communication skills when interacting with immediate supervisors, parents, students, peers, and other school related reference groups. Maintains and submits upon request accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulation. Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations and Board policy. Provides appropriate supervision and takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Does not administer corporal punishment or touch students. May perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair and/or building Principal.

Knowledge and Skills: Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents such as correspondence, surveys and electronic media. Ability to write professional communications. Ability to present information effectively and to respond to questions from individuals and groups Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and community members Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in written form Ability to complete mathematical operations and apply concepts of basic mathematics Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists Ability to maintain current job skills as directed, especially in technology-related activities Ability to perform essential duties with an awareness of school district requirements and School Board policies Physical Demands and Work Environment: The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus. In addition, the ability to withstand long-term use of video display terminals (VDT) is required. The employee may occasionally lift up to 30 pounds such as reference books. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The pace of work tasks would be considered as fast. Work is usually conducted at one job site, however, on occasion, this employee will be required to attend meetings, conferences, or workshops and events at other sites as assigned.
