Job Posting: Utilities Engineer Public Utilities Commission Utilities Engineer $6,488.00 - $12,152.00 per Month Final Filing Date: 5/29/2026 Job Description and Duties Under the supervision of the Senior Utilities Engineer, the engineer will conduct standard inspections, including review of written operations and maintenance plans, emergency response procedures, damage prevention programs, public awareness programs, operator qualification programs, and integrity management programs of jurisdictional gas operators, to ensure that the plans and procedures are developed and implemented in accordance with state and federal gas safety regulations. In addition, the engineer will conduct investigations of gas incidents and review gas operator’s gas safety practices to determine cause(s) of the incident and probable violation(s) of state and federal regulations. The engineer will conduct inspections of gas transmission and distribution facilities, including review of written construction procedures, welding and joining procedures, and operator qualifications to ensure compliance with state and federal gas safety regulations. Incumbent will be required to report for in-office training and meetings for job-related work and professional growth at the designated CPUC office daily except when on state business travel or holidays. This in-office training and meetings is expected to last for six months to a one year as outlined in the Job Control/Expectations Memo. Additionally, incumbent will be required to travel on a frequent basis including overnight stays and on occasions required to work unusual hours on short notice. Occasionally, incumbent will be required to travel out of state to attend week-long training or conferences conducted by other gas regulatory agencies. Working Conditions Must possess a valid California driver’s license, Class C. This position requires travel. This position is home-based. Los Angeles will be considered your office location should you need to report to the office. Minimum Requirements Minimum Requirements are outlined in the Class Specification (Utilities Engineer). Desirable Qualifications Ability to interpret and apply State safety regulations. Analytical ability to perform investigations of gas accidents. Ability to testify in Commission proceedings. Technical engineering experience and knowledge in the field of utility safety and reliability, specifically in the area of gas and communication technology. Ability to conduct technical investigations of complex issues involving utility systems and practices. Experience in preparing persuasive technical reports and making verbal presentations, explaining issues in a clear and concise manner. Ability to reason clearly and exercise a high degree of independence in performing work assignments. Experience working with computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, and other applications. Benefits Benefits Summary available.
