Job Summary
The instructional coach of Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) increases academic growth and achievement and social-emotional-behavioral outcomes for students by building staff capacity. The focus of this role may vary from academic, behavior, or a combination based on school needs.

Instructional coaches use job-embedded professional development and coaching to implement effective schoolwide instructional practices in the areas of academics and/or Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). This position makes use of research-based effective instructional and positive behavior support strategies to support the implementation of Anchorage School District adopted curriculum and resources. This position may have a flexible work calendar, with work days during summer, winter, or spring breaks. In exchange, equivalent time off during the regular school year will be mutually agreed upon by the employee and supervisor.

Instructional coaches collaborate with principals, school staff, teacher experts, and relevant district-based departments to build effective practices and systems at the school level that result in successful student outcomes. Instructional coaches facilitate and support collaboration, shared learning, professional development, and effective implementation of district-adopted initiatives. This role supplements district-based guidance and support.

This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The number of work days is based upon the AEA negotiated pay scale. Information on the pay scale can be found online on our Labor Relations Department website . Positions that are 0.50 FTE to 1.0 FTE are associated with the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS), positions that are 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Positions that are 0.39 FTE or less are not eligible for state retirement benefits.

Job Requirements
The following are required:

  1. A valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate.
  2. Educators teaching in a Kindergarten through 3rd grade class must meet requirements for the Alaska Reads Act .
  3. Three (3) or more years of successful elementary school teaching.
  4. Strong oral and written communication skills.
The following are preferred:
  1. Demonstrated leadership qualities and strong interpersonal skills, including giving and receiving constructive feedback.
  2. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with teachers and administrators.
  3. Experience in development, preparation, and presentation of professional development in a variety of formats.
  4. Experience in adult learning theory, coaching, and mentoring scenarios.
  5. Experience using district, student, and site-level data to select, implement, and differentiate instruction designed to meet individual student needs.
  6. Knowledge and experience of research, evidence-based practices in instructional design, differentiating instruction, and positive behavior support.
Essential Job Functions
Change Agent: engage instructional staff in collaborative reflection on the impact of their instructional and positive behavior support practices.
  1. The coach helps instructional staff to transfer/synthesize their learning from professional development though co-planning, support, and brainstorming ways to utilize the information.
  2. The coach facilitates:
    1. Fostering a positive, predictable, consistent, and safe learning environment
    2. School-based professional development
    3. Application of learning to instructional and behavior support practices
    4. Participation in and support of Professional Learning Communities
Teacher Leader: support and communicate school and district initiatives with the school community.
  1. The coach is a teacher leader who connects and supports district academic and/or behavioral initiatives, crafts and monitors goal setting, and remains focused on the main goal of increasing student growth and achievement.
  2. The coach facilitates:
    1. Implementation of site-based professional development
    2. Advocation for student growth and achievement
    3. The integration of district initiatives through MTSS implementation at the school site
Data Coach: facilitate conversations using data-based decision-making.
  1. The coach analyzes data at all levels to facilitate data conversations with school-based staff.
  2. The coach supports school-based staff and administrators in using data to improve instruction and behavior support practices.
  3. The coach facilitates:
    1. Collaboration with school-based staff on how to analyze and use data to improve student growth and achievement and improve student behavior outcomes
    2. Understanding of ASD's comprehensive assessment system
    3. Fostering learning-focused conversations
Instructional & Content Supporter: support instructional staff in understanding the why, what, and how of teaching through a balance of consultation, collaboration, and coaching.
  1. The coach facilitates:
    1. Constructive feedback via debriefing lessons, collaboration, co-planning, and modeling
    2. Support of instructional staff, in coordination with departmental staff, through curriculum implementation and assessments
    3. Use of standards to guide identification of essential knowledge and skills
Learner: engage in continuous learning to keep current in district-approved practices and programs.
  1. The coach is a learner who reflects on practice, is aware of the needs of an adult learner, understands the learning process, provides proactive support, and leads others in their journey to improve practice.
  2. As a learner, the coach is involved in:
    1. Engagement in professional development opportunities to build capacity as an instructional expert
    2. Engagement in professional reading concerning content as well as instructional coaching practices
    3. Practice and reflection on new learning

Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
