About FAR.AI FAR.AI is the world’s largest non‑profit AI research institute dedicated to ensuring advanced AI is safe and beneficial for everyone. Since its founding in July2022, the organization has grown to over 40 staff, published 40+ academic papers, convened leading AI safety events, and conducted pre‑deployment testing on behalf of frontier developers such as OpenAI and governments including the EU AI Office. About Communications at FAR.AI Communications seeks to bridge the gap between the cutting‑edge research of FAR.AI and public understanding. The team translates complex AI safety concepts into clear, accessible narratives for policymakers, industry leaders, and the general public, while avoiding hype and fear‑mongering. It partners closely with researchers to build credibility and amplifies the organization’s voice across media channels and events. About the Role The Head of Communications will lead and scale FAR.AI’s strategic communications efforts. In this role you will craft and execute a comprehensive communications strategy, guide a team of four specialists, manage media relations, and champion FAR.AI’s messaging across traditional and digital platforms. You will collaborate with research, events and policy teams, and represent the organization at industry events. Key Responsibilities Develop & Lead Communications Strategy Create and implement a comprehensive communications strategy aimed at engaging key decisionmakers (policymakers, AI researchers, and industry leaders) and shaping public understanding of AI safety. Ensure messaging is clear, impactful, and consistent across all channels and initiatives. Oversee the development of content, including policy‑focused technical content and social media strategies. Media Relations & Public Engagement Leverage relationships with key journalists and media outlets to secure high‑impact coverage, op‑eds, and expert commentary in influential policy and technical outlets. Lead rapid‑response communications to address misconceptions surrounding AI safety. Partner with internal leaders and subject‑matter experts to sharpen public profiles, media and speaking skills, and platform presence. Own the media kit and interview‑readiness that keeps FAR.AI top‑of‑mind for journalists. Team Leadership & Coordination Lead, mentor, and expand the communications team, including content specialists and social media experts. Coordinate with internal teams (research, events, policy) to ensure messaging aligns with FAR.AI’s mission and research focus. Oversee external agency relationships to grow reach and visibility. Content Strategy & Execution Own the cross‑channel editorial calendar, aligning content to organizational priorities and key moments. Own FAR.AI’s website as its primary brand surface, shaping content, structure, and presentation. Ensure content resonates with diverse audiences, including technical researchers, policymakers, and the general public. Lead the social media strategy, including organic posts and paid campaigns. Oversee the newsletter, setting its editorial direction, voice, and growth strategy. Stakeholder Engagement & Brand Building Oversee FAR.AI’s brand and protect its reputation as a trusted neutral source on AI. Represent FAR.AI at industry events and conferences. Establish and steward a consistent organizational voice across all teams. Collaborate with other AI safety organizations to amplify collective impact. About You 5+ years of professional experience in communications (public relations, science journalism, policy communication) or a similar operational role with significant communication elements. 2+ years of experience managing people and specialized teams (preferred) or demonstrated ability to lead complex initiatives without formal authority. Track record of setting strategy and vision in communications or an adjacent domain. Experience leading end‑to‑end initiatives, from goals and strategy setting through delivery. Demonstrated use of measurement and feedback to evaluate impact and improve work. Hands‑on fluency across earned media, brand, and content, with the ability to give credible feedback in each area. Strong interest in AI safety and the mission of FAR.AI, with a willingness to learn. Excellent strategic judgment and the ability to manage multiple projects and stakeholders simultaneously. Ability to build alignment across diverse perspectives and steer them toward a coherent strategic direction. Preferred (but not mandatory) experience : Crafting clear, concise, and impactful content for researchers, policymakers, and the public. Synthesizing complex technical topics into digestible content for non‑technical audiences. Familiarity with the AI landscape and engagement with governments, AI companies, and policy think tanks. Driving earned media strategy through strong journalist relationships. Entrepreneurial experience launching new initiatives and building communications from the ground up. Advocacy or political communications experience in technology and innovation policy. Building and scaling communications teams in early‑stage, fast‑growing organizations. Running digital grassroots and social media campaigns. Strong relationships with high‑profile journalists in tech and policy spaces. On‑record experience (e.g., media appearances, speaking engagements). Logistics Hours and Location This is a full‑time, long‑term position. The role can be based in‑person (Berkeley, CA, or Singapore) or globally remote with a minimum of 4 hours overlap with 9 am–5 pm Pacific time. Visa sponsorship is offered for in‑person employees. Compensation Compensation ranges from $175,000 to $260,000 per year, depending on experience and location, with potential additional incentives for exceptional candidates. Standard benefits are provided for U.S. and Singapore employees. Contractual Relationship Employees in the U.S. or Singapore are direct employees of FAR.AI (501(c)(3) research nonprofit).
