Custodial Maintenance Worker

Job descriptions/specifications are intended to indicate the essential functions and levels of work difficulty of the position and are not intended to describe in detail all the position's specific duties and responsibilities nor exclude other duties of similar level or difficulty. Additionally, it is not intended to limit management's rights to assign, direct, and control the work of employees under their supervision. Under the direction of the Recreation Division Manager perform a variety of custodial and routine maintenance tasks involving the cleaning, maintenance, and repair of facilities, walkways, equipment, and adjoining premises.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

(Essential functions are those functions that the individual who holds the position must be able to perform unaided or with the assistance of reasonable accommodation)

  1. Serve as a representative of the City of Mesquite, demonstrating a positive attitude and progressive actions through the display of professionalism, courtesy, and appropriate tact and discretion in all interactions with other employees and with the public.
  2. Dust, sweep, mop, vacuum, clean windows, and polish surfaces and floors.
  3. Following established procedures or verbal instructions, select the proper cleaner and supplies to effectively and safely clean and disinfect hallways, stairways, offices, meeting rooms, locker rooms, gymnasium, restrooms, drinking fountains, benches, etc.
  4. Operate floor cleaning machines, buffers, and carpet cleaning machines.
  5. Perform special cleaning tasks such as disinfecting contaminated or frequently used areas.
  6. Move furniture, equipment, and other items such as files, partitions, supply boxes, displays, storage containers, etc.
  7. Empty and clean waste containers; transport waste materials to appropriate disposal containers.
  8. Ensure that appropriate supplies such as toilet paper, paper towels, soap, etc. are available to patrons.
  9. Maintain proper inventory of cleaning materials and supplies at assigned workstations.
  10. On a daily basis, as well as after various public functions, check windows, doors, and office equipment to ensure they are secured and/or turned off.
  11. Maintain outside areas adjacent to the facility in a safe condition by removing debris, sweeping, hosing down areas, and adjoining premises.
  12. Perform routine maintenance in the building such as touch-up painting, replacing light bulbs, hanging and removing pictures, repairing and/or installing shelves and other fixtures, patching cracks or small holes in walls.
  13. Report damage, malfunctions, hazards, or irregularities of buildings and equipment to supervisor.
  14. Be dependable and meet acceptable attendance requirements at all times.
  15. Follow all applicable safety rules and regulations.
Other Job Functions:
  1. Custodial work is performed primarily at the Recreation Center; however, when needed individuals may be assigned to other facilities.
  2. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications:

The degree of knowledge and ability as outlined under this section is that which is necessary to satisfactorily perform the essential functions of this position. Knowledge of: Equipment, materials, and supplies used in cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining facilities. Safety procedures and methods. Proper handling and use of chemicals, solvents, and other potentially hazardous materials. Cleaning and disinfecting procedures. Appropriate tools or equipment for cleaning specific areas or performing routine maintenance tasks. Ability to: Understand and follow written and oral instructions and work cooperatively with others. Use cleaning equipment and tools properly and safely. Follow label directions on cleaning products in order to use them properly and safely. Operate small hand and power tools properly and safely. Operate electric floor cleaning and maintenance equipment properly and safely. Establish and maintain positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Perform daily assigned tasks independently without close supervision. Work a flexible schedule, such as late evenings, weekends, and holidays when needed. Maintain a high level of communication with department staff. Education: High School Diploma or GED. Experience: 1-year custodial experience preferred License or Certificate: Must possess, at the time of employment and continuously throughout employment, a valid Nevada or "border state" Class "C" driver's license, as defined by NRS 483.

Supplemental Information:

Working Conditions: Work is performed under the following conditions: Duties are primarily performed at the Recreation Center building and other facilities as needed. Work may occasionally be performed outside in varying conditions in varying and extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time. Schedule will primarily be evenings, Monday-Saturday. Physical Requirements: Strength and stamina to stand, walk, and climb stairs and ladders; stamina and flexibility to stoop, squat, bend, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
