Experienced Criminal Defense Attorney - All Levels Washington, DC/Baltimore Area, Maryland Compensation based on experience, level of responsibility, and portable business, plus incentive compensation (See below for ranges) Growth Solutions Team has been retained by an established Washington, DC/Baltimore-area law firm seeking experienced Criminal Defense Attorneys at multiple career levels, from attorneys with three or more years of criminal law experience through senior attorneys, managing attorneys, and partners. The firm has built a strong reputation in Maryland criminal defense and offers attorneys the opportunity to handle meaningful cases, spend substantial time in the courtroom, and take ownership of their work. The practice has grown in recent years and is now focused on strengthening the systems, processes, leadership structure, and operational fundamentals needed to support its next stage of growth. For an experienced attorney interested in leadership, this creates an opportunity to have a meaningful voice in how the practice operates and develops. For attorneys earlier in their careers, the position offers substantial hands‑on criminal defense and courtroom experience while working alongside attorneys with significant Maryland criminal trial experience. Opportunities at Multiple Levels We are interested in speaking with attorneys with at least three years of criminal law experience, including: Criminal Defense Attorneys Former Public Defenders Former Prosecutors Senior Criminal Defense Attorneys Attorneys interested in mentoring or supervising other attorneys Managing Attorney candidates Partners or experienced attorneys with an established practice or portable book of business A portable book of business is not required. However, the firm is open to discussing individually structured opportunities with attorneys who bring established client relationships or business. What You May Do Responsibilities will vary based on experience and seniority and may include: Represent clients in Maryland courts in criminal and serious traffic matters Handle hearings, motions, plea negotiations, trials, sentencing proceedings, probation violations, and related court appearances Review discovery and evidence, identify legal issues, and develop case strategy Draft and argue motions and other court filings Negotiate with prosecutors and advocate for clients throughout the criminal process Maintain strong communication with clients and provide practical guidance throughout their cases Independently manage a criminal caseload Collaborate with attorneys, legal staff, investigators, and outside experts Senior attorneys and managing attorney candidates may also have the opportunity to: Mentor and provide guidance to other attorneys Improve case‑management practices and attorney workflows Help establish consistent procedures and accountability across the practice Participate in hiring, training, and attorney development Assist leadership in strengthening the firm's infrastructure as the practice continues to grow Help shape the future direction of the criminal defense practice What We Are Looking For Juris Doctor from an accredited law school Active Maryland law license in good standing Minimum of three years of criminal law experience Experience in criminal defense, prosecution, public defense, or a combination of these areas Strong oral advocacy, negotiation, legal research, and writing skills Ability to manage cases independently while also working collaboratively Professional judgment, responsiveness, and accountability Candidates do not need experience handling every type of criminal matter. We are interested in attorneys with a strong criminal law foundation who want to continue developing their practice and taking on greater responsibility. The firm is considering attorneys at multiple experience and responsibility levels. Compensation will depend on the position for which the candidate is being considered: Criminal Defense Attorney – 3+ years of criminal law experience: $95,000–$115,000 base salary, plus incentive compensation Senior Criminal Defense Attorney: $115,000–$150,000 base salary, plus incentive compensation Managing Attorney / Senior Leadership: $150,000–$200,000 base salary, plus incentive compensation The firm is also interested in speaking confidentially with experienced attorneys and partners who have an established portable book of business. Compensation for those opportunities will be structured based on the attorney's experience, leadership responsibilities, portable business, and the economics of the practice.
