The Opportunity Human Agency is an AI‑native consultancy that builds, ships, and operates alongside our clients. We don’t advise from the sideline — we embed inside enterprise organizations and deploy production AI systems that do real work. Our current anchor engagement is inside one of the largest privately held construction enterprises in the United States, focusing on LLM orchestration, document intelligence, workflow automation, and enterprise integration. We need a Managing Director of Technology to own the technical side of the house as we scale Human Agency. That means leading client delivery, making architecture calls, building the engineering team, and being the technical voice in rooms with C‑suite executives. Responsibilities Lead technical delivery for enterprise clients and decide what’s feasible, design architecture, and ensure successful shipping. Build repeatable delivery systems, including discovery frameworks, reference architectures, deployment templates, and evaluation routines. Hire, develop, and set the bar for the engineering team. Own the pipeline and make staffing decisions. Own platform and infrastructure decisions, balancing build vs. buy and setting priorities. Shape AI strategy through real-world shipping experience, deciding technical bets based on value rather than slides. What We’re Looking For Built and shipped AI/ML systems in production, not prototypes or demos. Hired and led a technical team of at least five people, and managed growth challenges. Communicated technical trade‑offs to non‑technical executives in high‑stakes settings. Held strong, evidence‑based opinions on AI architecture, adapting when warranted. Comfortable in production details, intervening directly when problems arise. Well‑versed in cloud infrastructure and engineering practices with confidence in platform decisions. Bonus Points For Scaling a startup or early‑stage company before; experience in services or consultancy models (SOWs, staffing, client delivery); a network of engineers you’d hire again. Ideal Candidate Prefers building AI systems over discussing strategy. Desires to own a technical organization, not just a lane inside another organization. Comfortable making big decisions with imperfect information and owning outcomes. Wants to work on real revenue, real clients, and real problems. Energetic about building a company, not just writing code, but shaping how the whole thing works. Not Ideal Candidate Seeks a CTO‑like title focused on strategy with minimal hands‑on building. Uncomfortable diving into production detail when needed. Expecting an established engineering organization with playbooks already in place. Prefers delegating technical depth rather than engaging directly. Only experienced in product companies and not interested in building for clients. Considerations Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; advanced degrees are a plus but not required. Ethics: Commitment to responsible AI practices — transparency, human oversight, privacy. Travel: Periodic (10–20%) for client work, team offsites, and events. Location: Remote‑friendly; U.S. or Canada, with preference for EST timezone alignment.
