Speech-Language Pathologist
The school-based speech-language pathologist (SLP) is responsible for providing comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services to students with communication disorders within the educational setting. Working collaboratively with educators, administrators, and parents, the SLP assesses, diagnoses, and develops individualized intervention plans to address students' speech, language, and communication needs. The role also involves participating in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, providing consultation and support to teachers, and maintaining accurate documentation of services provided.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of students' speech, language, and communication abilities using standardized assessment tools, informal observations, and clinical judgment.
- Interpret assessment results to diagnose speech and language disorders, including articulation, phonology, fluency, voice, language comprehension, and expression.
- Develop individualized intervention plans (IEPs) based on assessment findings, in collaboration with the IEP team and in accordance with state and federal regulations.
- Provide direct therapeutic services to students, including individual and group therapy sessions, targeting speech production, language comprehension and expression, pragmatics, and social communication skills.
- Implement evidence-based intervention techniques and strategies tailored to meet each student's unique needs and goals.
- Monitor student progress regularly and adjust intervention plans as necessary to facilitate skill development and academic success.
- Collaborate with teachers, educational specialists, and other school staff to integrate speech and language goals into the academic curriculum and classroom activities.
- Provide consultation and support to classroom teachers and educational staff on strategies for facilitating communication and language development in the classroom.
- Participate actively in IEP meetings, providing input on students' present levels of performance, goals, progress, and recommendations for ongoing intervention.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of assessment data, therapy sessions, progress reports, and other documentation required by state and federal regulations.
- Communicate regularly with parents and caregivers regarding students' progress, goals, and strategies for supporting speech and language development at home.
- Stay current with research, trends, and best practices in the field of speech-language pathology through professional development activities, conferences, and continuing education opportunities.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Sciences and Disorders from an accredited institution.
- Valid state licensure or certification in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP or SLP-CF) required.
- Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) preferred.
- Previous experience working with pediatric populations, particularly in a school or educational setting, is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of and experience with assessments, interventions, and therapy techniques for a wide range of speech and language disorders, including articulation, phonology, language, fluency, and pragmatic/social communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficiency in conducting assessments, interpreting assessment results, and developing individualized intervention plans (IEPs) in accordance with state and federal regulations.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities and prioritize tasks effectively.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with students, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders, both orally and in writing.
- Commitment to professional growth and development, including participation in continuing education, training, and professional organizations in the field of speech-language pathology.
Working Conditions:
This position is based in a school or educational setting, with regular hours during the school day. The SLP may work with students individually or in small groups in various settings, including classrooms, therapy rooms, and other designated spaces within the school. The position may require occasional travel between school sites or to attend meetings, conferences, or professional development events. This position is an onsite position.
