By integrating risk assessment, prevention, and recovery with the broader insurance experience, we help customers protect what matters most while building trust, long-term value, and sustainable advantages for both our customers and our enterprise.As a Property Technical Specialist, you will conduct Property Risk Assessment surveys and service at complex applicant and written business to determine overall risk, as well as serve as a technical property resource for Risk Engineering and Underwriting. It will have accountability specific to the deployment of Underwriting and Risk Engineering practices for the Property Line of Business, with support to the Marine and International Multinational Lines of Businesses where applicable.Join us to continuously learn, expand your technical and consultative capabilities, and shape the future of risk engineering while delivering meaningful outcomes for customers and the enterprise.This role offers a remote work arrangement but prefers candidates who reside in or near Chicago, IL to effectively support regional operations, clients, and partners.This position can be hired at various levels depending upon background and experienceResponsibilities:Strategic Risk Advisory & Consulting• Act as a strategic risk advisor, partnering with Inland Marine clients to proactively identify emerging risks and cocreate practical, value-added mitigation solutions• Demonstrate customer centricity and empathy by tailoring recommendations to each client’s industry, risk profile, and business prioritiesRisk Assessment & Service Execution• Conduct property risk assessments and consultations across construction work assignments for all lines of business using onsite, hybrid, and virtual/digital delivery models• Deliver Risk Engineering practices for the Property Line of Business, with support to the Marine and International MultiNational Lines of Businesses where applicable.• Develop and execute data driven service plans that address loss drivers, operational exposures, and client business objectivesCommunication & Influence• Translate complex technical findings into clear, compelling insights using storytelling with data for clients, agents, and underwriting partnersDigital Enablement & Innovation• Leverage digital tools, analytics, and emerging technologies (e.g., dashboards, virtual tools, AI enabled insights) to enhance service quality, efficiency, and customer experience• Contribute to a culture of innovation, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement within Risk EngineeringCollaboration & Growth Enablement• Collaborate cross functionally with underwriting, claims, sales, data, and technical experts to deliver integrated risk solutions• Identify opportunities to expand Risk Services offerings and support profitable growthLearning & Talent Development (by level)• Engage in continuous learning to stay current on industry trends, emerging risks, and evolving technologies• Participate in industry association discussions, meetings, training, webinars, etc., such as NREL, NABCEP, IRMI• Mentor, coach, and support less experienced risk engineering consultants as appropriate by role levelEducation, Professional Credentials and Experience10+ Years progressive experience in property risk engineering, Highly Protected Risk (HPR), loss control, or related consulting roles, with scope and complexity aligned to role levelBachelor’s degree (BA/BS) strongly preferred in Fire Protection, Engineering/Technology, or a related technical discipline OR equivalent combination of education and experienceQualifications:Strong ability to assess risk, interpret loss data, identify trends, and develop targeted mitigation strategiesComfort using digital tools, analytics, and technology‑enabled platforms to deliver risk engineering servicesDemonstrated customer‑centric mindset with the ability to understand client priorities and tailor solutions accordinglyProven ability to provide proactive consultation, including anticipating client needs and influencing adoption of recommendationsStrong storytelling with data skills — translating technical findings into meaningful business insightsAdvanced written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of technical reports and delivery of client‑facing presentationsAbility to collaborate effectively across underwriting, claims, sales, agents, brokers, and technical partnersDigital fluency, including willingness to learn and adopt new tools, platforms, and AI‑enabled capabilitiesStrong commitment to continuous learning, with curiosity and initiative to expand technical expertise, strengthen consultative capabilities, and adopt new digital and AI-enabled tools to enhance customer impact.Extensive knowledge of NFPA Standards, FM Global Data Sheets and other industry standards preferred.Professional safety or risk management certifications Professional Engineer, Certified Fire Protection Specialist, Mechanical Engineer Preferred or required based on role and levelA valid driver's license is required for this position.CompensationThe listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition.
