Litigation ParalegalWe are seeking an experienced Litigation Paralegal to support the U.S. Attorney's Office, Western District of Virginia (USAO WDVA). Your role will involve preparing and processing a variety of legal documents, assisting attorneys in trial preparation, managing case-related databases, and coordinating with victim/witness specialists to ensure compliance with departmental guidelines. You will also handle legal correspondence, perform legal research, and provide technical support for courtroom presentations. This is a full-time opportunity in which we'll provide competitive pay, comprehensive benefits, and job stability and security.ResponsibilitiesDocument Preparation & Review:Examine, prepare, and process a variety of technical legal documents (e.g. complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, and subpoenas)Review materials and determine the need for assemblyObtain needed information from files, law enforcement agencies, or other sourcesSubmit completed legal documents to the appropriate AUSA or directly to the courtPrepare legal actions (e.g. indictments, criminal complaints, search warrants, judgments, applications, notices, affidavits, summonses, grand jury subpoenas, rules to show cause, proofs of claim, and satisfaction of judgment)Trial Preparation & Support:Help attorneys in trial preparation by compiling trial notebooks, jury instructions, witness and exhibit listsCoordinate with the victim/witness specialist to ensure adherence to current Departmental guidelinesNotify appropriate individuals of victim/witness issuesLegal Research & Documentation:Verify citations and statutory references contained in legal documents using original and online legal resourcesEnsure citations are complete and consistent with the source materialDevelop tables of contents and indices to briefs, listing cited cases, opinions, and miscellaneous referencesCommunication:Compose original letters requiring a knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminologyDraft transmittal of pleadingsPrepare requests for extensions of timeAdvise of actions taken or developments in cases referred by other federal departments and agenciesSend notices to attorneys representing defendantsCase & Document Management:Scan/input and link case-related materials into an electronic database and manage that databaseManage discovery and trial preparationAssemble physical files for new cases by filing materials in chronological orderPrepare and print conflict of interest sheets for assigned attorneys and number the initial discoveryPrepare files for closing by organizing documents in chronological orderEnsure that the judgment and charging document are in the filePrepare a closing sheet for the assigned attorney's signatureAssist support staff members by pulling files for court, checking court calendar, and ensuring files are accounted forPerform docketing duties using the automated case tracking system (e.g. opening, updating, and closing cases)Search the database for required information as necessaryOffice Administration & Support:Answer telephone calls, refer callers to staff members, or take messagesFurnish requested information concerning pending and closed matters and cases, functions, and office proceduresDetermine which matters should be referred to the AUSA and the urgency of the matterPrepare travel arrangements (i.e., itineraries, transportation, hotel reservations, travel authorizations, and vouchers etc.)Document Production and Quality ControlProduce a variety of written documents and materials using a wide range of office software applicationsIntegrate output from different software types into word processing or desktop publishing textEnsure all documents contain the proper format, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammarTechnical & Litigation Support:Provide automated litigation assistance to attorneys in trial preparation and courtroom presentationsUse various software applications and graphics hardwarePrepare documents, charts, and visual materials used in trialsProvide technical support (e.g. enlarging charts and photographs, duplicating tapes and videos, and marking exhibits)Background2 years of paralegal experience requiredProficient in Microsoft Office software programs (e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook)Knowledge of legal procedures and terminologyExcellent written and oral communication skillsStrong organizational skillsEducationAssociate degree in Paralegal Studies or an equivalent field requiredBachelor's degree preferredParalegal certificate preferredLocationRoanoke, VA 24011TeleworkN/AClearanceU.S. citizenship required since this role supports the U.S. federal governmentClientDepartment of Justice (DOJ)TravelTravel is requiredWork Hours40 hours per week8 hours per dayEmployment ClassificationEmployment Classification Eligibility — NonexemptRelocationNot eligible for relocation benefits
